the way of amusements still prevails in the ga\

Troupe closed a two weeks engagement tin
Tlieatre en Saturday night, an 1 will he im-nedi

C reuses can get up a crowd here when nothiuj
else can.
Signer Bi.itz, the conjurer, magician, ventrilo
quist and laughing philosopher, is at the Institut*
Hall, attracting crowds every night, making tin
old folks smile, and throwing Young America in
to spasms of uncontrolable laughter. Such a holt
has he got upon their affections that he could car
ry the whole native ticket of Young Charlestor
for the next Presidency or any other office in th<
gift of the pe ip'o. The Slgnor is decidedly t
benefactor of his race, and has probably mad*
more people happy than any other man now living,
having pursued his present vocation constant
Iy for twenty-five years. lie will close this week
and be succeeded by J. Issvo Williams' sptcnuu
Panorama of the Bible, which will probably be 01
hand for some time. It is said to be a very fim
thing in its way, and will doubtless be well patron
ized. The attention of the ladies, in particular,
are called to a specimen of the apple that Evt
eat, which will be exhibited, and dwelt upon al
length, by the lecturer. 1 believe this questior
has never been satisfactorily settled upon strictly
theological grounds. This man proposes to put it
to rest forever, and if he succeeds the ladies will
vote him a medal, or offer him a professorship in
a sewing society.
The Anatomical Museum which has been or
exhibition at the Hall of the Apprentices Library,
was also closed on Saturday, and its place will in
future be occupied by the Art Association, with
their paintings, pictures, and furniture. This
project has been taken up by men who are able to
carry it through, and the general organization
and arrangements have been perfected in a style
that will insure its popularity and success. Large
contributions have already been made, and active
preparations arc in progress for its liberal supply
and early completion. It will present the combined
advantages of a profitable study and pleasant
resort for artists, students, and ladies and
gentlemen of taste and leisure.
Our monetary prospects are slowly but surely
improving, and in a ratio with the advance of that
improvement, our business and commercial matters
will give additional life and buoyancy. The
prices of cotton is firm, and the amount coming into
market is rapidly on the increase. Two thousand
bales were sold 011 Friday at remunerative
prices, and the prospects are good for an increase
in both the prices aud quantity sold. The wholesale
merchants are making large preparations for
an extensive Spring trade bv laying in an ample
supply of goods.
MAGNOLIA.
To tlie Stockholders of the Kings Mountain
Rail Road Company.
Gentlemen :?Iu submitting their Report, with
the Report and accompanying Exhibits of your
Treasurer, for the past fiscal year, the President
and Directors cannot but express the belief, that
the condition of the Company will be deemed by
the Stockholders highly favorable and satisfactory.
Without arraying a multiplicity of figures,
which often serve to confuse rather than to elucidate,
the Direction prefer to give, in a plain and
concise manner, the prominent results of the operations
of the Company and its Road, as exhibited
in your Treasurer's statements of its financial affairs.
In stating his account with the Company, the
Treasurer, as shown by Exhibit, No. l,givcsanct
balance in favor of the Company of six thousand
tlirce hundred and two dollars and tmrry mrce
cents.
In Exhibit. No. 2, is found the net income arising
from freights, passengers, mail service, kc.
&c. : which amounts to eleven thousand dollars
and eighty nine cents.
These balances aggregated, as shown in Exhibit,
No. 8, make the sum of seventeen thousand three
hundred and three dollars and twenty two cents?
being the net surplus fund now in your Treasury,
and this too after assigning assets sufficient to pay
all demands due by the Company.
Exhibit, No. 1, by excluding the first and last
items on the debit side of the account, shows the
income of the Company arising from the sources
of revenue there mentioned, and amounting to
two thousand two hundred and ninety dollars and
ninety three cents.
Exhibit. No. 2, gives the net profits of the lload
from freights &c., as stated above?being eleven
thousand dollars and eighty nine cents.
These last two items, making in the aggregate
the sum of thirteen thousand two hundred and
ninety one dollars and eighty two cents, constitute
the unctuharassed profits of the Company for
the fiscal year ending 31st December last. This
result is equivalent to a dividend on the capital
stock of upwards of six and a half per cent.
The Report of your President and Directors,
which immediately preceded the present Hoard,
exhibited, on the 1st July 1836, a net surplus,
exclusive of the theu indebtedness of the Company,
of fourteen thousand three hundred and
seventeen dollars and sixty seven cents. In other
words: reserving a fund equal to UiC indebtedness,
and regarding the debts as paid, the Company
had, at the period named, a surplus fund of the
last above designated amount.
The Treasurer's Report herewith submitted
shows, that the net surplus fund, on the last day
of the past calendar year, amounted to the sum
of seventeen thousand three hundred and three
dollars and twenty two cents?being two thousand
nine hundred and eighty five dollars and fifty five
cents in excess of previous Report. This fact
conclusively evidences, that the condition and
pecuniary assets of the Company, to say the least,
are not falling off or deteriorating, and that the
Company has lost none of its solvent character.
In connection with this subject, the President and
Directors regard it due the Stockholders to remark,
that on the 1st day of January last?one month
ag?? y?ur Company was entirely clear of all debt
of every nature whatever, with the exception of
four accounts amounting to not more than about
fifteen dollars, and a dividend uncalled for. If
there be auv other demands against (lie Company,
they ate unknown to those most familiar with the
affairs of the Company.
By an examination of Exhibit, No. 1, it will he
seen, that the present Board paid during the fiscal
year former debts amounting to three thousand
nine hundred and eighty one dollars and fifty
eight cents: of which sum three thousand two
hundred dollars bore interest. It was thought
proper economy to payoff these claims, especially
those hearing interest, with the first accruing
funds.
A dividend of five per cent, amounting to ten
thousand one hundred and sixty dollurs, was declared
by the Direction, payable on and after the
lt.th February last.
The Board have to report to the Stockholders
the death, by Pneumonia, of one of their slaves,
Jacob. He was a valuable and faithful servant.
That a decrease in down freights would be realized,
can surprise 110 stockholder. This was
anticipated by your former President and Directors,
and so stated in their Report of last year.
"The very dry and unfavorable summer" ol
1850, to use their language, made it "evident that
the crop, particularly the grain, would be light."
The anticipation was confirmed. All are aware
of the pecuniary embarrassment of the commercial
world during the past fall, and the consequent
stagnation in business operations of the nature
now under consideration. Resignation was the
only alternative. The average monthly decrease
in down-freights, during the present management,
has been about one huudred and twenty dollars.
This has occurred, notwithstanding several important
customers in North Carolina, who hail
nroviniietv <!i tinned dpolinfTS With till! ltllUll
have returned to it.
As to up-freights, the diminished crop of 18ot
seems to have had hut little effect in diminishing
the profits of the Company: as, with the exception
of the months of October, November ami
December last, the monthly average of the preceding
year was about realized the present fiscal
year.
In passengers there has been a decided month!}
average increase.
The road-bed is believed to be safe; but a;
may well be imagined, the cross-ties are rapidl}
decaying, and will hereafter be, as they havt
been the past year, u source of great expenditure.
Tiie rolling stock of the Campuuy is all ii:
working order. One of the passenger-cars ha:
been re-painted. This was deemed essential, nol
merely from regard to appearance, but to it:
preservation from the uiilueucc of moisture.?

In closing his official connection with the Com.
pany. the President begs leave to return once
, more to the stockholders his unaffected thanks for
the hotmr coufetrcd in electing him as their chief
" officer?and hopes that his successor may have a
1 more propitious time to realize the pecuuiary
anticipations of the members of the Corporation.
Alt of which is respectfully submitted.

(too well known for comment:)
Prof. De Grath, Philadelphia.
Sir!?At intervals, during thirty years past, my
wife lias beeu snbject to rheumatism of the most
violent cast?[say four times a year]?sometimes
so severe as to make it necessary to administer
large doses of the tincture of guaicum and morphia,
and to rock her like an infant in a large rocking
chair, to induce any repose. Having frequent
correspondence with my son, (No. 103 Chcsnut
street of your city,) I informed him of an attack
she had about the middle of the month, [January,]
which was of such severity ns to completely paralyze
the system. He, in his anxiety for his
mother's welfare, sent me a bottle of your Electric
Oil; but as I am one of the practitioners of medicine
in our place, and not a proselyte to any kind
of patent medicine. I did hesitate to give it a trial;
however, on reflection, I concluded to try it. which
I did, in persona, directly up to the letter, and
aiier uie uuru or luurin application sue necame
rather passive, and before one-third of the bottle
was used, not a single vestige of the disease remained
in the system, and she still continues well,
although she rode out a distance of fourteen miles
without a renewal of any of the symptoms. I
therefore feel it my duty, for the sake cf suffering
humanity, and also fully believing that merit, under
all circumstances, should be rewarded, to forward
this testimonial.
I am yours, truly,
