Died?On the first day of January, inst, at her
residence, in Canton, Miss., and in the 09th year
of her age, Mrs. HARRIET CHAMBERS, wife of
Benjamin Chambers, Esq., formerly of Yorkville,
South Carolina.
It rarely happens, that he to whom is assigned
the mournful duty ofotfering a tribute to the memory
of departed excellence, is furnished with a
model so replete with all that endorses human nature
in time, as that which is presented in the life
and character of the christian lady whose death
we chronicle to-day.
The writer enjoyed her acquaintance from his
school-boy days until the present, and lie feels
constrained to say, that he is deeply conscious of
his inability to speak of her worth, in such terms
as truth demands. Those who knew .her, will at
once recognize an imperfect portrait; while those
who knew her not, may form a conception of what
the original was, by a glance at the outlines of her
moral likeness, and nobly aim at assimilation.
Endowed with a sound judgment, a tender heart,
and a refined sense of propriety, she moved preeminent
in all the details of domestic government
and economy. Enthroned in the affections of her
husband, it was her pride to reciprocate from the
altar of her heart, the sympathies that cadear,
and the duties that adorn the conjugal relation.?
As a mother, she recorded her name on the tablet
of her children's heart, securing for it l/irrc, an association
with all that is virtuous, good, and lovely
in the precepts of truth, and the purity of example.
As a friend, to confide in tier once, was
to confide in her always. As a christian, she believed
"the record that God hath given of his Son
and while to this "Record" her understanding
bowed in holy reverence, her heart, in subjection
to the Spirit of God, yielded the whole strength of
its faitli and love to the Lord Jesus Christ, as her
only Savior. She stood near the csoss and wept
- for her sins. She lifted her eyes to Him who was
bleeding upon it, and rejoiced in the smiles of his
mercy, and the infallible security of his covenant
love. Thus a recipient of salvation by grace, and
an heir with the people of God, she became a
member of the Presbyterian church early in life,
by a public profession of her faith in Christ.?
Subsequently she became connected with the Independent
Presbyterian Church, and together with
her husband, had the happiness to see several of
their children associated with them in the communion
and fellowship of the gospel and its ordinances.
Her piety was of that consistent scriptural
character, which necessarily c nnmands respect,
wherever and in whomsoever it is exhibited,
and secured for her the regard and confidence of
those who knew her. The light of her religious
iuHucnce cheered and encouraged the christian in
lio .Intti.s .it'lmlv lirintr and nsWB ail irresistible
rebuke to the cureless neglect of the soul's interests,
nnd the claims of Divine authority.
In the last days of her life, and especially in the
closing scene of her existence below, the grace
that had given tone and lustre to the endowments
of her mind, and the qualities of her heart, during
the many long years with which Heaven had honored
her christian fidelity, shown forth with a power
and splendor, that disarmed death of his sting,
and swept from the grave the dreariness of its
solitude. The five weeks of her last painful confinement
to bed, were made the occasion of many
a memorable lesson, on the all-sufficiency of Divine
grace, to beget in the soul a cheerful submission
to the will of Hod, in the saddest hour of
bodily suffering. Filled with the love of Christ,
and the love of souls for whom he died, how oft
with the big tear in her eve, would she in the tenderest
manner press uponthe kind, but impenitent
visitor, the importance of religion as the only preparative
for death and eternity. And when the
shades of death began to fold their cold drapery around
her, and to quicken the sad attention, and
deepen the intense feelinir of her family and friends
that hung upon her every breath and moving feature,
as they stood weeping about her; what
words of heaven wrought confidence sweetly fell
from her lips, as she said "Solely 1 entirely ! resting
in the Lord Jesus Christ, I leave you, dear
family, and friends, for rnv everlasting home in
heaven." Thus saying, she breathed outlier spirit
into the hands of God, and sweetly fell asleep.
0, let me live the life, die the death, and gain the
heaven of the righteous

NEW COPARTNERSHIP!
ENCOURAGE HOME ENTERPRISE!
JOHN McCANTS,
HAVING purchased the interest of WILLIAM
M. WALKER in the establishment of WEIKERT
& WALKER, the undersigned take pleasure
in announcing to the citizens of York and the surrounding
country that the "NEW COACH FACTORY"
will be conducted by them under the firm of
WEIKERT & M'CANTS.
The successful conduct of the establishment has
enabled them to commence under every advantage
; the building is arranged specially for the
purpose; the very BEST WORKMEN have been
procured in every department; and with a good
stock of well-seasoned timber and a superior lot of
FINISHING MATERIALS,
direct from market, the proprietors guarantee that
their work will not be surpassed here or elsewhere.
The Senior partner is an experienced
workman, and they can therefore pledge themselves
for the superior DURABILITY and finish of
their work, in every particular. Thoy will constantly
be in receipt of patterns, and will be able
to put up jobs in the latest and most approved
styles. Particular attention will be given to all
kinds of

which will be done promptly and faithfully. The
Proprietors have purchased the right for this section
to use the PATENT METALIC HUB AND
COUPLING, a recent invention, which need only
be seen to convince any one of its superior value
in imparting ease, lightness and durability to every
sort of vehicle. It adds but little to the cost,
and renders the work almost doubly serviceable.
The public are respectfully invited to call at their
sales-rooms,
opposite STOWE'S HOTEL, and inspect their
work. The establishment has heretofore succeeded
in giving entire satisfaction, and tho new firm
are sure that with equal encouragement, they are
as well prepared and as ready to serve a generous
public.
I?* All our work is warranted to stand good
for twelve mouths; and if any failure occurs
within that time, the reparing will be done carefully
and cheerfully.
Call and sec us ; and, meantime, "let him laugh
who rides."
J. R. WIEKERT.
