oppressive man. but not so with a dangerous corporation.
I know, sir. that the hanks have a power
over every man in the community?that few
ever escape their hostility. Thrv reach all, either
individually or through friends. It is useless
to disguise the truth while we have banks, we
have a privilcdged class, and the effect upon the
community is to make the many live and labor
for the few. Sir, the rate of interest they acquire
is enormous when we look upon their issues.?
But of that hereafter. If the corporation itself
is so objectionable, this formation of its capital is
more so, for that only goes to show, that notwithstanding
the great privileges they enjoy, they
never begin to discbarge their own legal and moral
obligations to the community by establishing
themselves, as individuals would be compelled to
do.
2. The maimer in which captil is formed.?
Our own acts furuish the examples. A bank is
established by legislative enactment, and commissioners
appointed to receive subscriptions: the '
shares are $25 each, and five instalments are
required to be paid of five dollars each, iu specie
paying bank bills, aud after the first instalment ;
shall be paid, the bank shall go into operation ; I
but of this fund, a bankinghouse. engravings, &c., j
are purchased, aud with the residue it begins to i
discount notes and circulate paper. Customers I
then begin to deposit, and on this fund they extend
their line of discount?the time arrives for |
paying the remaining instalments, and a call is j
made on the stockholders?some borrow from the
bank on pledge of their stock, some on their notes
endorsed, some pay in real money, but generally
they pay in the notes of the bank itself or other
banks of the city. This is the way in which the
$1,000,000 of capital is paid up. All pap*r, all
credit, no cash, and this monster to feed from the
vitals of the community, living only by its toler- |
ance, and liable to be closed up at any momeni
for want of specie, takes its place upon the privileged
orders of the laud. This institution, then,
liaTingits capital paid up in its own bills and the
bills of other banks, proceeds to invest its capital
to the best interest of the stockholders. State
or city stocks, or the stocks of other banks, are
purchased with one-half of the capital, upon which
they receive the same interest as any individual
would receive ; and with the residue they enter
into the field and commence banking, not upon
$1,000,000, which they said the necssity of the
community required. The community are only
secondary. The watch-word is 10 percent, dividends?no
matter how much more. We should
never forgot, "that money is the root of all evil."
A Valuable Medicine.?During the present
week, no less than six of our friends, who have
been induced to try Professor De Gbath's Electric
Oil for rheumatism, in consequence of having
seen this preparation advertised in our columns,
have called upon us to state the result of their
experiments. These persons assure us that their
rheumatic pains have been entirely cured by a
few applications of Do Grath's " Electric Oil,"
and they recommend its use to all who are afflicted
with any of the diseases which it is designed to
cure.?Prov. Advertiser.?It can be had of the
agents here. See advertisement in another
column.
Columbia Market.
December 8, 1857.
The week ending on the 5th instant was a very
unfavorable one for the sale of cotton. The news
from Liverpool which came to hand on Wednesday
put prices down a full cent on the low and
middling grades, and ^c. on the better qualities.
The sales of the week foot up about 300 bales, at
9J ? 9Ac. Yesterday there was but little done,
and the market is still laboring under a heavy depression,
and 9 ? 9A seems to be the offering
prices. In the grain and provision market we
have no material change to notice, and therefore
we continue to quote corn 70 ? 75. No oats offering.
The flour market has been quiet but
steady and consequently we continue to quote
$5.50? $6 for common to superfine brands ; extra
family flour $6.75 pi bbl. No change in the
price of fodder. We still quote 90c. ? $1 V
lOOlbs.

Prof. DeGrnth: I have been afflicted for thir
teen years with Neuralgia and other painful complaints,
and I have been unable to sleep soundly '
or walk any distance for many years past. Last
week I got a bottle of your "Electric Oil." The
first night I slept soundly and well, and to-day I

EDITED BY
JNO. L. MILLER <fc JOSEPH II. BLACK.
THE PRESENT YEAR is drawing to a close,
and with it ends the THIRD VOLUME of
the YORKVILLE ENQUIRER. So far, its career
has been prosperous, and every effort trill be
made to make it still more deserving of patronage
in the future. It shall be our endeavor to commend
it to the intelligent of all classes, by making
it the medium of
sums mmaitos ;
To the moral portion of the community by instilling
tiie most elevated sentiments; to the philanthropic
by advocating well-matured measures of
social or economical reform; to the Humorous by
the infusion of SELECT WIT; and to the patriotic,
by making every possible effort to advance the
political and material
ijfsiasm o? ?hb mm,
and to give permanency to her civilization, and
new life and energy to her kindling genius.
A NEW FEATURE FOR THE FOURTH
VOLUME, will be SKETCHES of
Revolutionary Characters
and INCIDENTS, in this and neighboring disrricts.
Many of our readers are descendants of ti e heroes,
whose noble deeds and dauntless bravery we
would chronicle, and to them, such sketches will
have a personal interest. We have invited all
who possess information of this kind to contribute
it, and we hope they will do so without delay.
The Agricultural Interests
)f the State will receive more special attention
:ban we have yet devoted to it. Regarding farmng
as the meaus of producing at the South, it
tssumes a paramount importance, and an effort is
leing made to enlist the services of practical farners,
and induce them to give the beneficial results
of their experience.
SEE MSSSI mm,
foreign and Domestic, shall be carefully culled
ind condensed, and on the plan of "MERE-MENriON,"
we will give multum in parvo. As soon
is trade begins to revive, we will give weekly, a
nil report of the CURRENT PRICES. Owing to
he difficulty of getting a Reporter, as well as the
itagnation in business, we have been somewhat
emiss in this for a few weeks, but we will make
jermanent arrangements for 1858.
TEMPERANCE
Vill still continue, among other social blessings,
o be ndvocated. Our own District is evidence of
ts blessings, and we can say boldly, that its mor.1
tone has improved with the progress of the
temperance came.
Our Charleston Correspondent, "Magnolia," will
ontinue his racy sketches of busy life in our Meropolis.
QSIGIIAS eOraiBTOIOIS,
If there is one thing in which we may justly
akc pride, it is in the talented corps of Coatribitors,
who, during the past year, have aided us
n giving tone and interest to the columns of the
Inquirer.
We have reason to hope that the Muses who
lave visited us occasionally will not sleep. Mrs.
I. W. STRATTON, J. WOOD DAVIDSON, P.
). S., our young friend "WILLIE," and others,
rill continue, we doubt not, their poetical contriutions.
In the PROSE DEPARTMENT, we have the
romise of some well-trained pens, in addition to
hose who have already given us their aid.
