O thou art beautiful: so did I deem,
When first thy maiden charms my sight did bless,
Aod often o'er my memory like a dream,
Steals the sweet vision of thy loveliness. ;;
Thou art beautiful as the azure skies,
When o'er the broad expanse the starry r??B
Like Heaven's bright jewelry, in splendor lies,"
And spbery music wakes in dulcet strain, c
Thou art beantifnl as a summer eve
When summer roses are in riohest bloom,
And clustering woodbines faifry bowers weave,
And dark magnolias shed their swaet perfume.
Thou aii beautiful as a bright spring morn,
When through the woodlands rings the choral lay,
Aod bright-eyed flowers peep from the velvet lawn
To cheer the russet maiden on her way.
Thou art beautiful as she was of yore,?
The swtborn Venus?daughter of the ware?
Whose silken fetters Qodlike captors wore,
Vet wooed the bondage for the bliss it gave.
J- .
Thou art beautiful as that fickle queen
Fur whose dear sake the walls of Troy fell,
I* not till deeds heroic mark the scene
And Hector's arms the haughty foe repel!
Thou art beautiful as the deep blue sea,
When stars press their bright cheeks to its kissing

waves,
And mermaid music wakens merrily,
From pearly shells and gem-bright coral cares.
' ,".vj
Thou art beautifolyes, almost dirine
is the soft music of thy speaking face,
Where the pure lineaments of thy soal doth shine
la yellow splendor, yet with witching grace.
0 t?ion art beautiful as angels dreams,
Upon a Sabbath morning in the skies,
When round their oonch celestial radiance beams
And heavenly visions in their fancies rise.

Bit. Ztofc Collegiate Institute.
At a^jpeolal meeting of the members of the Mt.
Zion Society held on the 29th ultimo Gen. Jo'rk
A. Alstok was duly elected Principal of the above
Institution vice J. W. Hudson, deceased.
Gen Alston is a native ofxthis District, and a
Cinate of the Sonth Carolina College; and from
long experience and great success as a teacher
at the Ebenezer and Rock Hill Academies, of
York District, and the high reputation which he
enjoys for scholarship and learning, we feel confident
that the Society has made a most wise and
jadidons choice, and that our ancient and cheerished
Institution will still command and merit
the patronage so long bestowed and conceded
to it
We learn that W. R. Robertson, Esq., was appointed
trustee in the place of Mr. David McDowell,
resigned. And that a resolution was
adopted by the Society, authorizing the Principal to
appoint his Assistants, but such appointments to
ha subject to the approval or disapproval of the
Board of Trustees.
We also learn that the Society ordered an appropriation
for the present of $300 out of its funds
towards the erection of the Monument^ over the
remains of the late J. W. Hudson, deceased.?

Mr. Ten Bkoeck's Winnings.?As everybody
is anxious to know whether Mr. Ten Broeck made
himself whole by his winnings in the Cesarewitch,
for the expenses and losses of his spirited enterprise,
we will state, that we have reliable informaHot
Iftrwelv on the result, and that he
*"?- ? o- J not
only reimbnreed himself for *11 his oatlays and
mishaps, bnt is largely in excess. Without any
special information on the subject, however, all
who know Mr. Ten Broeck would be sure of this
result He had lost the whole season through, and
the Newmarket meeting afforded him his last and
only chance for the season to get even. The withdrawal
of Pryor, also, made it still more necessary
that he sbonld not let slip the only opportunity
wilful his reach to redeem his unfartunate campaign.
Under such circumstances, a man with
no more pluck than a rabbit wonld feel bound to
bet with spirit, while a game man liko Mr. Ten
Broeck, would be sure to go a good length. The
weights suited him; the mare was in fine condition,
and all we have to add is, that if he laid oat
E-bare one thousand pounds at the odds, he stands
winner to the tune of half million of dollars. Although
a great many hare been laughing at him
here, he is now laughing at them, in the right
time.?Porter's Spirit of the Times.

From the Spartanbugh Express.
Senatorial Electiou.
Messrs. Editors: The enemies of Col. F. W.
Pickens hare reported, in some parts of the State, that
his friends have found out they cannot eleet
him, and have determined to drop him and go for
J5x-Gov. Manning. This subterfuge is for effect;
not a bit of it. On the contrary, the friends of
OoL Pickens intend to ran him, and confidently
mgtect to elect him. Not only will this section
certainly give him their support, but all the upooantry
are for him, with very few exceptions.
His patriotic descent, his ample fortune within
the limits of South Carolina, and above all, his
high character and eminent position in Society,
surely entitle bim to the confidence of his State
afid the whole South. The bitterest opponents of
afCol. Pickens allow him to possess boldueBs of
character, great statesmanship, that he is a fluent,
ready debator; and certainly he has an enviable
reputation abroad.
Col. F. W. Pickens will most assuredly be
strongly supported by all the upper districts from
Columbia to the mountains. COWPEXS.

On the 27th, thedece&sed and and one James S.

a difficulty arose beteen them. Whereupon.
Chaney struck Fletcher a blow with bis hand that
broke his neck. Chaney made his escape, although
several persons were present. The finding of the

the State Agricultural Society of North Carolina,
held in Raleigh last week, the Hon. A. W. Venable

Cotton.?As it regards the sale of cotton in our
market, there is but little we can say on the subject
: the planters seem determined to hold their -
cotton off the m.irkot for the present, hoping, we
suppose, to obtain better prices by and by, nnd in
consequence of this stato of things, the quantity
offeriug is so light we may say we have almost no
market at all; still the few sales that have been
made aro at former prices, viz: 11 @11} cents.
The total sales of the week nre only a fraction

STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT,
Columbia, S. C., October 30, 1857.
By Hit Excellency Robt. F. W. Allaton, Governor
and Commander-in-Chief in and over the State of
South Carolina.
THURSDAY, the 19th of November, is appointed
a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to Almighty
God, for all the blessings of the past year.
It is recommended that on that day business be
suspended, at least during the hours of public
service, in order that citizens may have the opportunity
to attend, with their families, their respective
places of worship, and there in the.House
of the Lord to pay their vows in the presence of
all the people, to worship Him in the beauty of
holiness.
There are, in the course of every year, mournful
results, enough of calamities by sea, disasters
on land, casualties and crime, besides the natural
wearing out of the human frame, to remind us
that death is the common lot of man.
Free, however, from pestilence and famine, enjoying
a good degree of health, and having secured,
in peace, abundant harvests, we should indeed be
ungrateful who should decline to devote one business
day, especially, to the contemplation and
adoration of the divine author of creation, and all
its bounties.
Given under my hand, and the seal of the State,
in Columbia, this 30th of October, in the year
of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
fifty-seven, and in the eighty-second year of
American Independence.
