purest rays of virtue and morality over the whole
Masonic fraternity in this place.
Accept then, Sir, this cup in the name of^Iackey
Chapter and Gibson Council. May it be received
by yon in a spirit of kindness proportionate
to that degree of gratitude with which it is
presented. May this act of the companions,
comfort and console you. while traveling the rugged
path of life, stimulate and encourage you in
promotiug the good of mankind, in diffusing light
and knowledge and in cultivating Masonic and
Christian Charity, which are the great objects of
the sublime institution. May your oblations of
piety and praise for the good of your fellow men
be as grateful as incense?your love as warm as
it- flame, and your charity as diffusive as its fragn
nee. May your conscience be as pure as the
A1 ar around which you have so often knelt, and
yoir conduct as acceptable as the offering. May
the exercises of your charity be as constant as the
returning wants of the distressed widow and helpless
orphan. And now, sir,?when a few years
have rolled around, and you shall have retired
from thestage of public action and the field of your
usefulness?when, like Abraham of old, vou may
<byDi vine dispensation) be blessed with many
days, and from a debility consequent upon your
Reclining years may become confined within the
walls of your chamber, may the approbation of
lleaveu thcu be your encouragement, and the tes
thnony of 11 good conscience your support. And,
then, too, may the presence of this humble token
recall your memory to the recollections of the pastawaken
withiu you bright associations, which like
the rays of a brilliant sun in the depth of wiuter
shall penetrate and illuminate your then enfeebled
mind, dispelling the gloom therefrom, and diffusing
their genial influence oyer ah its faculties, to
cheer and comfort you, eTen

In some soft dream, or ecstasy of joy,
" Peaceful, sleep out the Sabbath of the Tomb,
And awake to raptures in a lodge on high,
The remarks were loudiy applauded.
Mr. Gibson, who seemed to be suffering from a
severe cold, which was increased by the exe; ises
of the day, and the installing of the Officers of Philanthropic
Lodge, in the evening, replied briefly in
substance as follows : Ho said he had never risen
to speak with greater pleasure, and at the same
time under greater embarrassment. It gave liim
pleasure to reecive the very flattering address
which had just been presented, and the beautiful
testimonial with which it was acepmpnnied. To
receive (he said) such a mark of esteem from any
body of his fello- -citizens, would indeed be a
high honor; but he felt that it was greatly enhanced,
coming, as it did, from/his brethren of

that it would always be his highest ambition to
merit the approbation of his Brethren, and to assist
them all in his power, in carrying out, efficiently
and satisfactorily, the great and important
duties which devolved upon them, as organized
bodies of Free and Accepted Masons.
The Band discoursed music at intervals; and
to its notes the brotherhood marched to their Hall,
where the Reporter's mission ends.

Cotton.?When we clo ed our inquiries preparatory
to making up our last weekly report, it will
no doubt be recollected that we left the market active
at very steady and full prices, averaging
from 10.J to 12 ceuts extremes. The week just
brought to a close has been rather a dull one; not
however, from the lack of demand, or from any
decline in prices, for the demand is good, at.d prices
ate steadily advancing, but from the fact of
the Christmas New Year holidays interveneing,
which caused the receipts to be light, trid consequently
the transactions were limited. On Saturmorniiig
the news from Liverpool by the Niagara
came to baud, reporting the cotton market an advance
of Jd. on all grades, with sales for the week
of 56,860 bales?speculators taking 9.500 and exporters
3,400 bnles, The trade at Manchester
was good, and the price of manufnetared goods
* advancing. These accounts will doubtless have a
favorable effect on the cotton market in this conntry
; still we must wait the opening of the coming
week, and also more extensive operations, before
wc will be able to say with any degree of accuracy
to what extent the market will be affected by

Bacon.?We haTe no material or quotable
change to notice in the bacon market, and we
therefore continue to quote: shoulders 8109;
sides 100101; and hams 11012 cents, according
to quality.
Corn.?The corn market has also been without
any material change, and consequently we continue
to quote 80@83 cents per bushel.
l'ecs.?The supply of peas on sale is fully adequate
to the demand, and therefore there is no
change in prices. We still quote 65@70 cents per
bushel.
Oats.?The demand for oats is limited, and as
the stock is fair there is no change in prices. We
continue to quote t30 cents per bushel.
Flour.?The flour market has been quiet but
steady during the past week, and we continue our
former quotations of $6j@$7 for common togood
brands; superfine $7J@$7|; and extra family
flour $7] per barrel.
Fodder.?There has been no change in the fodder
market, and we continue to quote $1]@$11
per 100 pounds.

BOCK HILL ACADEMY.
THE Exorcises of this Institution will be resunicl
on the FIRST MONDAY IN JANUARY
NEXT, under the Miperintendnnce of its former
Principal, Gen JOHN A. ALSTON.
His long experience and well-known reputation
as a toucher of youth, render it nlmost unnecessary
to say anything in reference to his qualifications.
Suffice it to state, that hnving received a
thorough Academic education, he entered and
graduated at the South Carolina Colleges, and since
has been engaged, for about fourteen years, in
teaching. Such opportunities and experience,
have eminently qualified hi in for the important
and arduous duties of thoroughly training and
developing the intellectual faculties, and have enabled
him to acquire that tact in imparting instruction
to. and governing young men -which experience
alone cau give, and which are so essential
to the prosperity of all such institutions.?
We the Trustees, therefore, in whose midst, he has
for years been engaged in teaching, knowing him
to be thus eminently qualified, take great pleasure
in recommending all who have sons to educate,
and desire them to be thoroughly prepared
for entering any of our Colleges, to send them
here.
The citizens of Rock Ilill are moral, and many
of them religious. They have a prospect of having
established very soon, two Churches. There
is here, a flourishing Division of the Sous of Temperance?there
is not a licensed grog-shop in the
place, and ail of its citizens s"ein determined to
discountenance everything calculated to tempt the
vouiis and rising generation into either cxtrava
gance or dissipation.
This School, at its late adjournment, numbered
about sixty pupil?, and wo, its Trustees, can with
pleasure, testify to the uniform correct deportment
and studious habits of the students.

rflHE design of the inventor was to get ap & Press
X which woald answer every requirement of the _
offer made by Geoboe Bbuce, of New York, in
1851, viz: cheap, light, eatily managed, and capable
of throwing off at least 500 sheets per hour.
This Press will throw off from 600 to 800 sheets
per hour, doing the work equal to any Cylinder
Press. The bed stands about 80 inches from the
floor, and is tlie most convenient of all Presses to

as well as any other Cylinder Press. It
requires, to work it, a man to turn the fly wheel
and a boy to feed the sheets.
The Inking Apparatus is very complete, and
differs from the apparatus used in Cyliiider Presses
generally, being more like that used in the
Power Platen Presses. Two rollers pass over ^
the form twice to each impression, taking inK for
each sheet.
A Press of this description for newspaper and
jobbing, bed 44 by 28} inches, with roller mould,
roller stocks, blanket, flying and registering apparatus,
&c., complete, will be famished for $600.
If intended for book work chiefly, an extra ink
fountain will be furnished for $20. The press,
fly wheel, &c.,will weigh about 2000 pounds. The

the whilo, and ascertaining, with great caro and expense,
the best mode of carrying ont all the detail*
