COTTON SAW GINS.
Straight Ribs, vs. Crooked, Uniformity of
Roll, &c.
A LTHOGGH the advantage of thestraight rib 1
the COTTON GIN has been discovered for
more than twenty years, yet it has not been sufficiently
known or appreciated by the planter. The ;
advantage consists simply in this: that the ribs, J
when worn, can be moved down to where tl:?-y are !
not worn, which answers the purpose of a new
sett of ribs. " Three moves can be made, which I
gives four wearings, which is equal t?? four setts of
ribs. So that a purchaser having in view prospec- j
tive expense, would lose the price of three setts [
of ribs if the ribs of his gin were not moveable. J
^ Any planter with common intelligence can move
the straight ribs himself, and thus obtain all the '
benefit of a uew sett of ribs.
The greatest uniformity can be obtained in the
roll by giving the ribs the proper angle, the effect
of which is, to throw the weight of the roll more ;
upon the saws than upon the seed board, and by j
adjusting thp seed-board so as to prevent the seed
when once detached from re-uniting with the roll; j
this improvement has been made by the subseri- i
bcr within a few months.
With regard to fast picking gins, the greatest
amount of lint is obtained in two ways. First, by
having long teeth lying ns nearly parallel to the !
verge of the saw as possible, so that the teeth entering
the ribs so much, point foremost they artobliged
to carry all the cotton through that they
get hold of. A fifty saw gin with these sort of
teeth on a nine inch saw has giued eight bales per ;
dny. The sedoutfplan is, to form the breast so
#i,?? ?t,o ti?, ,.;tlS in-inlv :lt ris!it ancle.
and thus packs the cotton into the teeth ?f thsaws.
This plan is very straining on the saws. :
and causes a much heavier draught. Whether tincotton
is injured by an overwrought speed, tin- |
planters must judge for themselves. The suVeriber
will furnish to the planters of this and adjoining
Districts Cotton Gins equal in durable valueto
any in the country. Delivered at Chester, \ork. |
or Charlotte, of any landing on the rontl for $2 :
por saw. The brushes of my gins are covered with
[ tin : which adds much to their strength and dura- j i
bilitv. i
All orders promptly attended to. i
