Ta C'HnrsrMAS TREE.-The enter g tainment givbn on Christmas Eve, d by the ladies of the Methodist Church, was in allrespocts a gratify ing success. The Christmas Tree was loaded with gifts for the little folks, and the distribution of these was a source of general diversion. r The tableaux and dialogues were - very creditable, both to the talent of C the participants and the skill of the 1 ladies under whose supervision t they were prepared for the occasion. Y The music, both vocal and instru- t mental, was likewise excellent. The r audience was one of the largest as c sembled in Winnsboro in some time, s and we hope the entertainment was n a financial snccess. S AD AccIDE.-A private letter to u.; from Ridgeway, dated Dec. The store of P Iessrs. Holloway & Reid was en ored about nine o'clock and Mr. teid, who was sloeping in the build- Ii g was robbed of a large sum of mon y-estimated at $3,000 The build ng was then fired, and the citizens, ti n going to the spot, found the r cad body of Mr. Reid, almost & otally consumed by fire. Altogeth a: r this is one of the most outrage- j( us deeds that we have ever known. t< Ve have been informed that the e lloged perpetrators, four negroes, I toro captured at Trapp's Store, r Lear Monticello, in this county, and 0 h'o trust oiur information is correct Ie' iVhen the guilty parties are found e~ nd duly convicted, they should be L1 amished to the full exbont of the u iw. It is to be regrot ted, however, 1 hat the criminal law, as amended t: ai 1869, does not mete out an ad- b quato penalty for either burglary n r arson. When these offences ri v'ere punishable with death, they 9 vore of much less frequent occur once than they have been since the ~ mendment of the law. The man a who enters the dwelling or sleep n rig-apartment of another, in the r< larkness of midlnight, either to it dll or to rob, or the one who b rilfully sets fire to a house occupied 'y human beings, is hardly entitled to more consideration at the hands of ix he courts than he who murders ' w is victim in open day. Yet the 0l rw~ makes a distinction in favor *i f the burglar and the house-burn ti r. CumstuAS .lirors.--As has been , sual for many years p~ast, there ' vere ser1ious5 disturbances in differ- e nit portions of the countr~y, on or gi bout Christmas. At Augusta j here was a difflculty-of which we Ti iave not . learned the particulars esulting in the death of one white nan and one negro. At Aiken C here was a shooting affray, in i vhich a wvhite man received a pain 'ul wound in the foot, and a negro b vas shot in the shoulder. At BIlackstock on the 24th inst. a diffi multy occurred between a white man ianmed John Matthews and a negro amed Lee Finney, in which MIatthews drew a pistol and fired t4 ipon Finney. The wound in- c llicted was a very severe one, and r he negro has since died from its 0 affects. Matth~ews fled the neigh- ~ borhood, and has not yet been ap- ti prehen dod. In the Southern IHome of the 27th 1 inst. we find the details of a bloody ~ riot that occurred in Charlotte on Christmas evening. We have not h space for a full account of the dis hurbanco. There was much pistol.. t. tiring, between whites and blacks, a md there wvas at oneO time a~ proba bility of the riot becoming very ! general. "Shop" Johnson, a negro t. who was willy drunk at the time, o was killed, and seven other negroes b1 were wounded-one badly. B In all these , disturbances the a rnoving cause was too much whis- ' key. Tau B3LAOKstooK Hoxxornx.-From * private letter received from Blackaitock, we gather the following tetails of the 4iffioulby at that lace : "On the evening of thi 24th ( December a quarrel started in ie bar-room of Mr. William [cCrory, between ono Jack Mathis, white painter, who has been in 10 employ of Mr. Mackorell, atud 0ee Phinney, a negro. The former row a pistol on the latter, and ath were put out of the bar-room once. Almost immediately the )port of a pistol was heard, and hinney, stepping back on the eps, said that Mathis had shot im. The ball buried itself in the cull, above the loft eye." We wore tistaken in stating in our last issue, iat Leo Phinney had died of his ound. Though dangerous, it is At considered necessarily fatal. The same correspondent mentions fatal stabbing affray between tophen Young, Sam Dufflo and eorge Mercer, all colored, *result g in the death of the last-named he others were arrested and taken > Chester, to await trial. THs WuDMANs.-This company wve their first entertainment of ieir present visit to Winnsboro at hospian Hall, on Thursday night. he hall was crowded, and the per >rmance was good. "Marriage and 'ivorce" was very creditably present 1, the several players acting their irts finely. The extravaganza, Dur Prima Donna" caused much erriment, and the songs by "Little Ilie" were well rendered. Altogeth the exhibition was an unusually Dod one. The performance on riday night was likewise fine. The exhibition of this troupe i Saturday night, was fully i good as the previous ones, 3rhaps somewhat better. They id very full houses during their itiro stay in Winnsboro, and those ho saw their performances will be leased to have them make our town iother visit. One feature of Friday's entertain ent deserves special notice. It as the personation of negroes by [essrs. Mowry and Fletcher, two of io company. In most attempts to produce negro sayings and repro. gut nigro character on the stage, iy one acquainted with these sub ets, and closely observing the ac >r, must be struck with the differ ice between the original and the ,itation. The witty sayings, the mady repartoes, the unnaturalness the language--being always either Cquisitely precise or absurdly in >rrect--with the grimnaces and atti ides of the actor-all give an air of nnaituralness to the performance. 1 this part of the Wildmans' enter tinment the observer could not at be struck with the fidelity to xture. The songs in imitation of 3vival hymns, a species of religious crcises still very popular among 10 colored people, were a perfect iitation, in word, accent, and the titudes of the performers, of what in at almost any time be heard in a egro church. Altogether the rep isentation was excellent, and while naturally provoked a laugh, at the Isme time excited admiration for sing quite true to nature. One more is still at large. One the negroes confessed everything, he party went to the store under e pretence of trading, got a fa ~rable opportunity, and shot Mr. :ied. They robbed the safe and 'ent away. One of -the party was mn sent back to fire the store, and is suspicious actions at the fire led > his arrest. The whereabouts of 2e stolen money has been divulged, ad it will probably be recovered," We trust that the negroes arrest :1 are the guilty partios, and, if icy are not, that the perpetrators I this ci'ime will be quickly appre ended.
