Prof. Langston, one of the loading dolored men in A morica in a recent tpeccli delivered at Chillicothe, Ohio, speaka as follows on the con. neotion of the blocks with the re p'blican party. "It will be perceived from what .1 have already said that I hold that C )NSIDIrn ATiON8 OF THEtP CO(MMON 0000, maintained through its agency, which bind the white voter to tho republican partly, or lead him to change his party relations, and co. operate with another, do and r'hould,in the main, determine the c nduct. of thn; colored voter. bhould the republican party over provo false, in policy or principle to the highest good of the republic, influencod by corrupt lenders or erroneous Jootrinos, the duty of the colored voter to abtunion and loavo it would be as inper'itivo and obligatory as that of his other follow citizens. Our relations to thits party are thoso wyhich pring from political conviction, the resuit of an intolli gent apprehionsion of our duty as American votors. If through t.his' party wo have been emancipated and enftranehisedl, prtcto of life niud littab accorded u it is beciause, in okinig to secure the largest good of the nat ion, and in its efforts in that bechalf, our freedom and elevation hiavo boou acomplished. Gratefully for all this, wo find thiercia no eon considorat ion of obligation binding uis in any special usanner or degree. This party seeks tho consorvati on of the general good. Fourteen yearn of administration of the state and national government, d uring the most eventful periodl of our history dem~onstrateos the sincrity of its pur-' pose and its power. It is the duty of all, the colored citizen no more thtan the white, through influence and vote to aust ain it in this work, The rep~ublican party is not, then, a bilack man's party. It was not or ganizoeolely, nor even mainly, in hsinterest, it makes no pledges to care for his welfare beyond that of any or all other. IIaving intro duced him, in aceordanco with. law into the Ameori can body politio, it gives him a common and e qual, but no peculiar or special ca re. E~qual rights and equal protection in theoir enjoyment is its guaranty to all. To this end it pledges its power. BUT WHAT or "T'lE NEW DEPART. For since the 5th of last month, when Frederick Douglass and my self addressod a 'mioeting of our colored follow-citizons at Hiillsdale, near Washington city, discanting upon the oondluct of certain individu als and associations, advising the people with regard thereto, and wvhen a new doelaration of independ ence was submiitted and adopted, we has e road much in cartain politi cal journals and heard (livers expros, nions whichi indicate that somno of our friends feel that there is to be a general ezsodu uf' t he colored pen plo, north' and sout h, from the re. pulhican party ; andl besides, within a very few days we hao had sent to many of us an elaberato and longthy document "Ont the future of the colored man in thle south," writteni by erG'vornor Scott, of South a'tuo. lin; formerly a resident of Ohio, in which we are advised, in a sort of fraternal, yet more of a patronizing spirit, or our pol1ititonl duty and dan. ger. The words of this o.s governor, formerly an ardent repu~'ican, have to us a strange sound. It is not the clear, insp.iring voice of disin teresteliners, the assuring ut teranco of jndJeious statesmanship. the huelo blast ruf that loidership which corm. ~manda tad controls tbohnanrs and 'judgment of the people. Ilin words are rather those of dis appointed and despairing ambisiol bewailing a fruitless political past in anxious longing for a future mor propitious. Governor Scott may be assured first, that the colored American wil attempt no independent politiea organization proffering his voto t the domoortio party upon the term suggested by him ; nor, in tie second place, is it possible to play upon his fears in such manner as t scare him into the democratic party for th, sake of gaining succor who defeat overtakes the regublican par ty. Whatever others may do, what over may be their courseo, as yet the colored American findw no just oaus for pursuring any other ojurswe that that adopted horotofore, and to whiol Ie has so persi .tently adhered. . Mr. Benjamin, formerly Soerotar; of State of the Confederacy, is no said to be one of the mwost auceessfu pleaders in the courts of Gulihall an, 'estministor. A writer says I( makes ?10,000 a year, and look almost as young as he did befuro th oause was lost. Says an exchange Don't lot your angry passion rise, Because your neighbors advertise, And draw away the dimes But boldly, do as they have done, Pursue the course thoy b ve begun And drive away dull times.
