It is a well known faot that cotton
f xtories"at the South have been inak.
in monoy while many of those at the
.North have boen compelled to sus
pend operations in whole or in parts.
Somie of the reasons for this state of
things are as follows :
1. Labor i., iicaper at the South
than at the North.
. In onswmiuce of a milder cli.
imlate, the necessary expense of living
is less there than in New Etglaud, as
is also that of heating factory build.

3. Coal is abundant in the South
and cheap water privil-Cges can be ob
tained in every direction,
The puroba.o of' the raw material
direct from the )roducer Saves the
profits of iinnrous middlemen, the
cost of several buildings, and long
transi ortation.
To these advantages I am sitisfied
that still ainotioher of great importance
eai b added. The Southern factory
should buy the cotton in seed, gill
anI thell spin it, without packing into
bales ; and it is to urge sotne of your
inventivo readers to arrange iachiu
cry for this purpose that .1 write
this communication. Some of the
advaitages of'such a system would be
as folloas
I . The yarn would be stronger,
Baled cotton cannot be prepared for
carding without beating, and thus
weakoling tue libot to a greater or
less extent.
2. There would be less waste.
Frequently much cottoni is discolored
and otherwise injured by foreign sub.
stances that have been packed with
it. I unader'stand that at the Noi th
andl in E'uropoe it takes from 108 to.
I16 lb.s. of cotton to mnake 100 lbs.
of yain ; and although the waste.is
not so great at the South, it is never
'lheless considerable.
3. The cotton seed would be press.
cd at the samoe estallishmoent, and
the oil and the oilcake sold for many
millions each year.
4. The interent on gins and gin
houses, which are now idle the
greateir pa t of the year, woul'l be
iavod to planters.
5. The raising of cotton on small
farms would be encouraged. The
plantation system is not adopted to
free labor, and is steadily breaking|
uap ; but until cot on can be readilyI
sold in the seedl, few small farms
wvill be opened in the cotton section,
for the reasons that a man cannot
all'ord to buy and operate a gin if he
only pl:ants a few acres of cotton.
