VITTEN FOR TH E ATLANTA tCONST5'rI.
TION-BY PROF. WADDELL.
We reachedoustom square after
'dark. We had ascertained that
there was a hotel -upon tho space
-kuown as St."Paul's'thurohyard, and
- as I had a fancy to spend our first
Sibbahlth ere, (It being Saturday
night) we took a cab to the "Cathe.
dral Hotel."
Arriving as we did, after drk,
nothing of our whereabouts -co-uld be
seen. But eatly the ne'xt morning I
looked out of our 'chimber windows
and gazed upen, first, a contraotod,
irregulur court, hemmed in by tall
gloomy stone blocks on all our four
sides save-wbere the strots enolosing
the yard fbund egress ; and, second,
upon a mighty stone pile rising up-in
- the middle of - the .court, and, in.
deed, completely'filing it up, with
the exception of a few square; yards
of paving stones nnd gra-s arot d
the edifios, The enclosure is known
as -St. - Paul's 'r'areh -yard, as is
atated above, while the church is the
world..renowed ' "St. Paul', Cathe
dral." Words and figures give wit
erably inadequate - impres'sions of
the vast size of this prodigious build
- ing. - It -is -most disadvantageously
situoted for iffoet. The bther lOuild
- ings crowded pp so closely to it that
.no full view of it is practicable.
You cannot see the-whole 'house -at
any ditanioe which wottid bring'-its
vast proportions properly into view.
Tb- ground plan is that-'of a -Latin
ero : 'ength, 650 feet, width 100
feet ; height to top of cross surmnoun..
ting puinoipal steeple, A870 feet.
Notwithstanding - theo euormous
proportions, the 'whole beilding,
toople and all, could be plac
ed inside of St. Peters' Church
at Rome. The cupola is of briuk,
S108 -fct'in -diameter. -The interior
is decorated wi'th eight paintings,
*rtpresenting events in the life of St.
Paul. The nave and transepts are
adorned wi-th -ma-ny monumentp,
among-which are (1) a statute of
-Johu4oward, (2) Dr. -Johnson, (3)
Sir Joshua Rejnolus, (4) Lord Neil
non. Down in the crypt are the
*graves of Sir - Christopher'Green, the
architect of St. Pauls, Lord Nelaton,
Lord Collingwood, the Great Duke
-of Wellington, and many other illus
trious me~n.
Divine sertlee -is held three
times a day in St. Paul's. The vast
ssce df'the interior is only seated its
the further tnd -of the -nate. W e
attended worbhip hero one raw Sab
bath morning, and what., with tie
chilling atnioshere, the meagre audi
ence and the truly barreu sermon
which was preached, I havo seldom
spent atnore dismal hour.
The ascent to the dome is in the
-centre of the Chutoh 'by "6li -stqa,
of which 270 ste-ps take . its to the
WVhispering C allery," wlHoh derives
its name frin the fact that the
.gentlest whisper is heard frot one
-side to the other of it.
Anotber source of mu-ch curiosity
to-visitors is the "Clock Rootn."
lleore is the -great clock wvith the
bell upon wvhich the hammer strikes.
Trhe minute hand is feet long and
weighs-25 poudds. The hell is 10
:feet in dianioter, weighs 11,474
pounds-while the hammer weighs
145, and the clapper 180 pounds.
This bell is never tolled save upon
occabion of the death of some mem
'ber of the toyal'Famuily, the ibishop
of London, Dean of St. Paul's, or
'Lord Mayor. T1he striking of the
-huge hnnriner, howdver, is hreard at
'every hour of the twerity.four.
Many a deepless night have I spent
in the West End of~ London, more
than two and a half miles distint
from-St. -Paul's and he ar d the long
;protracted, solemn roar come rever
bhera ting in deep, hoarse tones over
the countless .roof-t'ops'of ti~e great
'city, and, and, in the dead silence of
tight, ehoing like some awful super.
natural voice. I can find no words
to describe the sound of St. Paul's,
clock at night. Poe's poem of "Theb
Blells" gives you some faint concep
tion of 'it.
St. Paul's is in the very beart of
the city of Lonidoni proper. This
space has for its base the north bank
of the Thames; its westein boun
dary (reon Middle T1emple 'Lane to
Southampton Buildings; its northern,
Smithfield, Barbican aa.d Tinsbury
CircuS, retut-ning to the Thamies at
the T~ower. Temple Bar, a vabt
stone archway thrown across Fleet
street, is the only city barrier re
maining. H1er. the strabd ends andi
Fleet strebt begins. Enormous iron
gates btand open day and night, save
upon occasion of IRoyal visitation,
when they are closed ina order to be
thrown open by the Lord Mayor in
obedience to a herald's trumpet, an

be able to formi souse concepti-n of
the population of London. And if
one of their dense fogs Mhould wrap

Fleet street or the Strand, how many
