The Fairfield Herald. PUBLISE1.D IVERY WEDJVSD/Y. A Down-East Tar's Victory. In a lecture recently delivered in -Boston, Mr. John L. Hays related as an anecdote of the revolutionary per iod the story of the whipping which King William IV. received from a Portsmouth sailor-boy. Nathan Lord, afterwards a prominent ship master of Portainuoth, was a lad of one ,of the privateers.captured by a Brit ish frigate. One day a young mid :shipman came near the prisoners, who were having an airing on dock, and spoke suecringly of "the rebels." Young Lord, being a lad of spirit, retorted : "if it were not for your rank sir, I would make you take back -that insult." "No mutter for my rank" said the gallant though arro gant young officer ; "If you can whip -me you are welcomo to do it." The challenge was eagerly accepted and the two had a regular sailors' set-to. The Yankee was victorious, and the Eng. -lishman acknowledged himuself boa ten, and shaking hands with his oppon ent said: "You are a bravo follow; give me your name and I will not forget .you." At the end of the voyage all the prisoners, with the exception of Lord, were sent to prison. The ad sairal sent for him and informed him that the young Duke of Clarence, a son of his 31ajesty George II1., the young midshipman with whom he had fought , had requested that ie be set at large; that he was at liberty to go into any part of the kingdoi, and that the Duko had placed ai.5 noto at his service. Attempt to get a Husband. B3ottlobury, of Camden, will never drive into the creek to save another woman from drowning. Ile saw a girl named Sparks tumble in the other day off a boat, and be instant ly plunged in after her, caught her by the dress, and swam to the shore with her. As soon as they were on dry land, Miss Sparksgavu a hysteri cal scream, flung her arns around Bottlebury's necok and fainted. Just thea the father came up with the rest of the family, and perceiving the situation, he dashed up to Bottle bury, graspel his hand and said - 'Take her, my boy, tako her I It is hard to give her up. It wrenches her o'd father's heart ; but she is youra. Bless you, my children bless you 11 Then Mrs. Sparks cried, and she said she hoped Harriet would be happy. The sparks manifeteod their emotions by climbing up Bottlobury's legs, and pulling his coat tail, While llarriet came to, and laying her head on ]luttrobury's shoulder whispered iss me, darling.' Bottlobury amazed and indigniant tore himself -away and god, lie was arrested that afternoon on a charge of breach of promiie, and on trial the jury gave Miss Sparks two hundred dollars damages. Bottlobury has intimated to his confidential friends that if any other woman intends to fall overboard near him, she will find it to her ad vantage to learn to swim first. iax AddlcA. ,The Mormons brought 2,437 immi grants over from Europo last year. The Deau seems to have hope that some day a reconciliation of all religious sects may be brought about, and his re peated liberality toward other churches lies excited much nlarn. Whon Muller delivored his lecture the choir did not attend, the clergy wore only their college gowns, and the assembly issaid to have resein bled a public meeting rather than at congregation.
