As previous meetings of the unterrifled in the Court 1louse had caesed groat damage to the fur. niture of that building, the meeting was held in the Pines near the tan yard. Thicgs passed off as had boon amnounced in the prdgrammo, and several side plays occurred that were not in the programiae. At an early hour the backers of Johnab, l1arber, Grandison Jenkins and WMoDowell were out in full force, and whippers in for each candidate were stationed in the streets to boat up rccr iits. The meeting- organized by electing John Stuart Chairman and Mr. it. A. Smith Secretary. It was soon evi dent that however much each candi.. date loved himself he hated Johnson more. Barber, McDowell, Jenkins an Vaughn allied thimselves against Johnson ivho was backeo by Sheriff Duvall. As usual, great cenfusion Dharactcri-.d the opening proceedings. Cries of "Mr. Chairman," "order," "rolection," "Barber" "Johnson," 'Du-vall," &c., &c., prevailed against the v 'orte of the Chairman, who with stontorian voice, alid.a 'huge club for i gcval, vainly erlewvored to pre ierve order. There was the usual amount of sursing and -ouarreling, and knivos Lmd pistols and-brickbats were drawn ,or an aIrray. Juctico Mackey pro alaimed the peace and called on the Sheriff to assist him. The noisy irawlers did not seem to pay much re. gard to the majesty of the law. No )ody, howevor-was hurt, and order vas-restorcd. Then the nominations )omnienced. Eightcen delegates vere to be chosen and about a hun Ired names were given in. The voting sommenced and continued till dark iess put an end to the conflict. The mode of voting was novel. As ach person was proposed, his adherents bvent down' about a hundred yards and there formi~ng in column, march ,d past two tellers stationed on ;tumps who counted them. The rc utwas th.,n recordec.. ~The 'first ba-llot showvod .that the 3o'lition had about one hunudred and Lh irty supporters, while Johnson's strengt~h was at first sixty-fivo and bhen gradually dwindled. The re port was spread that Sheriff Duvall had'expressed his determination to sponid two thousand dollars to scure Johnson election, and this'greatly en raged the virtuous and incorruptible votors. The result of thme vote was that the D~uvall-Johmnson party was completely 'fanned out," not electing a single :lelegato of the whole eighteen. Thiiu was quite a blow, for Johnson coni. dently expected a majority of the delegates from this -grecinct. Barbor and Jenkius were both olectod delegates, receiving about 120 votes each. Johnson received only 38, and Sheriff Duvall ab~uut 50, The result-of the meeting is. that Johnson lows every delegate from 'Wionsboro, unless sonmc of them "change their minds." The question now is how tho eighteen dologates cleoted will ho divided among the throe candidatos who joined forces. *An effort will doubtless be made to influenee the delegates. Whether this willgsucoed is one of the miyste ries of the future. School Convention. Ono or two nominations woro mado and de clined when Mr. R. Means Davis was requested to preside and explain the object of the meeting. Mr. Davis in taking tho chair, remarked that this Vas An informal meeting preparatory to a genoral convention, and that no regular busineil could be tr:ii.sacted. Ho called the attention of th, conven tion to the pay certificao grievance, giving an a cause for it that trustees have herotofo re cuploy ed teachers blindly without having any idea of what money would be uo the town.. ship. For the beneilt of the trusteco a table was picpared of the amounts probably to ho reali.rcd iiext year froni Siato apportiomacnt and local tax. The anount of out: antding certifi. cate3 of this year was then taken up and it-was fourd that btmees were due from overy township except No. 4. Mr. Crawford explained that P300 of this yerr's, tax had been devoted by order of Cardozo, to last year'a certi ficates. Had this not been tho caso no certificates, of this year would re main unpaid. A talk then ensued as to tio number of iou.ools that could be maintained in each township. It was agreed that from two to four would be % proper number until the funds increase. The propriety of havinf pay schools in tho first part of the year was also agr .,d upon. Mr. B. If. Robertson in a series of retuarks, spoke of the difflLculty of hav ing ccificates paid, and moved that a conumitteo be appoiutcd to mmCIo rialize the Legilature to permit.the School fund, both State and local, to remain in the county and be deposi ted in the bank, when collected. Mr. Robertson' ditekimed any inten tention of -eflecting upon the charae. ter of the Treasu'rer, and said that he was perfectly satistiod with the nanageiueut of the inoney by Mr. Smith. But as the money was sub ject to the order of the tIus tees, the Treasurer would be relieved of much a nvanco by tho change. Truiteei lienry d a cobs and Joseph Thonipson op. posed the motion, on thoi ground that the Treasurer was paid to do the work, and that the treasury was the proper place for public moneys. The motion however v:(led. A discussion thenc ensued upon the time of opening schools, wv.hether in October or Jauuary. Arguients were offered on either si1e. ]t was finally agreed that the i:at er sho ulI be regulated by the trustecs of the diiferent township.i to & t them solves. The que~st ion of teachers' salbirics! was discussed, and it seemed to be the-opinion of the nuaeet ing thait a few good teachers should be employed and weLE Ud, 1t appeare d fr'om the rey; a of the~ trustees that a local tax~ had been as ses50a in almost every towns.hip, showing that the school sys-temi was gaining favor among the peopi e. Col. B3. E. YK!kin, by reqjuest., do. livered a few pertinent reinarks which were well received. It was resolve~d that when -the conven.ticn adjourn it st.cnd adjiou .acd to mieet rat eleven o'clock on the first Saturday in November in the p)ublic school h.ouse in - Winnsboro.
