Ihe f airfield Herald. PUBLI89D X VERY WE1D'NESDA4Y. Letter irom Gon. longtreet. LVNCnIUnGO, VA., Sept. 3, 1873. . V. Hughes, As<9. DEAn bin: The Rihelmond ED quiror, of the 29th of August, re ports Col. Withory, in his Warrenton speech, as having said, "in reference to Longstreet, he not only accepted the issue, but went over for money," &o. I hopo that I am not asking too much in appealing to you and your friends to mako known the truth in this cause. The charge of Col. Withers as -stated, is so vaguo and indefinito that I can find nothing in reply except general denial and the record of my qnotivea as announced by mne from 'timo to time. There has been no room at any time for doubt as to my motives and wishes in regard to our politics. When they were first announced in the spring of 1862, Istated expres dy that I could seo no other way by whiich the Southern peoplo could rO instate themselves in proper sympa thy and relations with the General Government, and thus save them selvas greater lo%es and humilia tion. There commenced and ended >all my reasons and motives in con -nootion with this matter) and my letters have so plainly expressed my views that no one can misconstrue ithen except they do so through 'malice. If Colonel Withers 1:nows the re cord, and he virtually claims to it wlhen he makcs grave allega tionas as matters of fact, lie know when ho aade his charge that it was not true. If ho made ttiom in ignorance or reckle. disregard of facts he is equally culni blo. In order, however, to placo the natter beyond question or doult, i propose that Col. Withers gives the namiaes of thc parties to tlhis transic tion and the time and place 4, it:, occurrenace, so ats to gi'3 m1o oIe. thing tanagible. i thlink that I C; I unfely pronise himia, as soon s he nuts his charge in such share as to c:.iblo Inae tu take held of it, that i will prove to the world that there is not a word of truth in his allegations ugainst me, nor even a reasoin for them except in malice. Anaother V irgininn, R ov. Mr. 'el. d leton, ainiing to avail hitmself of th prejwlice gotten up on false ,tate n:ena, goes back nino or ton yo A. o attack my record as a soldinr. L. w ill say to him, as I have said iti reference to the other charge, that i, is too vague and indefinite as it stands to be met by the evidence of' I it - nessesa.. But if he will give the namr. oi' the sti- ff otleer's of (G en. Jce aid I e. g.ineral and staff officers of the it-- CArp., of tia ariy of Norhe rn \ irgiia Wi)) are cogi.z'ait. e f ats, m id .isserts them, I will undertake to prove by his own witnesses that, his .ment is .al'o falso. I nn, sir, very respectfully, youi iitost obeJell servant. '1 raiwly iltit tirrgin Mchool. She reported young M~oss, wholi denied the charge made by lhen, and this led to an ianimaizted aiid angry dispute. A lexainder became enragedl at thmo young muan for the part takeni by haim in the conatroversy, and, advancing foward Moss, drew a knaifo and stab bed han in the breast. Moss thore upoan plunged a dlagger into Alevan (dor's heart, who fell faital ly wounded. Moss turned to leave, but Mrs. Ahex, ander, who was at the side of lheu' hus. TheIa result, was that, both lay mortally \vouinded on the scone of' tho conifliot, and expired in a short time the cane withina three minutes of the other. It is not deli nitely knaowni whether M1oss died from the wounds received fi'om the~ wife or husband, as all were sever'o and rea sonably suflicient to pi'oduco death.
