The Ftfrfleld Herald. PUBLIS8ND The Savannah Republican, in pub4 ishing the tRlowiug paragraph re. inarks: "We frequently have to go abroad to get ioformation about our eolves; aid here i3 a very striking illus tration of this truth. 1o te New York South we ind the flilowing statement, which will be news to our people, and most probably to Govern. or Smith himself." A project is now on foot to annex a part of South Carolina to Georgia. The people directly interetted in the scheme are willing to ;i, and it is un. derstood that Governor Moses of South Carolina also favors it. A 'Oemmission will be appointed by 'Governor Moses, who will ask for 9a similar Commission from Gieveror Smith. These two Commissions wilt sketch out some basis of annexation. i'ho territory proposed to be annexed embraces Oionee and Pickens Coun. a s ties, commencing at Andersonville and running the Senooa River, thenen 'to the North Carolina line, South Carolina reserving the right to fish, eto., in said Tugalo and Seneca Rivers. This territory was originally what was known as old .Pickens Dis t riot. Two very thriving towns, Wal halla and Pendletoo, will be thrown in Georgia under the cession of this territory. One of these counties BPiokens, we believe-paid $28,000 State tax last year. The information contained in the above paragraph is news to us, and we thiuk it will be to Governor Moses. la Interesting and Painful Surgical Operation Successfully Performed. Yenterday morning Dr. John T. Darby, assisted by Dr. Edward gmith, succeeded in extracting a Rmin. nie ball from the body of Senator Snmitb, of Barnwell, where it has been imbedded since in 1864, when Mr. Smith received a wound in the asoaault by the Confederate fottea on Fort, H1aarison. The ball was not found at the time and the wound healed, but the presence of the ball has been a source of constant irritation to the lungs since. During a recent severt attack of pneumonia inducod by the late severe weather, Dr.- Darby wrs salled in, and upon examination of the patient beoan.e sati6fied that the ball was the chi'ef source of the dis order, atnd determined upon the b->l measure of removing it. This ho did1 yesterday by makicig an incitiou into the back of the patient, and removiml the ball from its contact with ;I;. right lung. Senator Suitl refuse". to be Placed under the i'Auetrne of any o the antesthetio ageita whtllb undergoing the operation, and sub. nitted to the painful ordeal with a fortitude which grotly eonttibuted to the succesa of the operation. The Irish people are the greatest potato eaters in the world, and know all about cooking that fine esoulent. a We copy their mode of boiling pota toes from an Isrish paper :"Put the potatoes in a pot or kettle without a lid or cover, and water just sufficient to cover them. After the water come, naearly to a boil pour it off, and re place it with cold water, into which throw a good portion of salt.
