Mrd Woshing ton Is widely known as an able joui nalist, and as an astute observer o fpo liticil developments. Afy Dear Sir I received thi morning yours of the 8th. I entirel agree with you. -By themselves th Democracy are powerless 1 knowin this we have asked Liberal Repubil ,oans to come out and wake a stan against corruption and tyranny. The have done so, and have burned thet bridges. Now it is our interest t stand by them and to snake tht alliance which will seouro the Preui denoy, House and Senate give us a larg governing majority in the country If we do this we shall get rid of Gran and have a bettor d!y l our unfor tunate people. I loot at this subjew from one point of view only-tho lift ing up of the South is all that I car about, and to that I will macrifol everything. I hear another plan proposed namely : to nominate a "straig t on ticket," and slip in our man. Such victory is doubtful at best, and if wo would turn to dust and ashes. Th path of honor is to stand by the Lil-era' who have done what we asked then to do and declared against militarj despotism ; and in this case the 'path of interest and honor fully coin aide. if the Northern Democrats put ul a separate ticket they may go to ruin their own way. * 0 * * It I high time we had left their leading strings and begun to think and ao for ourselves. I think we have toc much at stake to say that we wil allow their thimble-rigging politi oians to shape our destinies at Balti more. At the same time all thi the indications are that the Conventioi will r atify and r6oommend the Gree lcy and Brown ticket * * * 4 Theri is no other hope for the South It is our only ark of safety. Yours truly. L. Q. WASUINOTON, FRANK II. ALFRnisrD, Wilmington, N. 0. - ---* -0-- _ An Earnesg Appeal. The man who wrote the followinj liked reason rather than rhyme, an( prose than poetry. Corn in the bottom land. is beginning to suffer, while that on the uplands look sickly. Gardens, so far, are com r piete failures.-Laurex8oills Herald. f On Wednesday evening last there was a severe hall storm at l3arnwell, pronounced by some of the oldest 9 residents the severest within their y recolleotiou, that has ever visited , that section. It lasted twenty min g utes, and we learn has seriously injur. ed the growing crops. The bail I stones varied in aise, and were of p every conceivable shape. Thero was r little or no wind, or the damage ) would have been greater.-.Barn well I Sonlinel. This section of country was visited a on Saturday last by a heavy rain, and we are pleased to learn that it b was very general over the district. It was greatly needed to bring up b the cotton, a large quantity of which we learn, was provented from germi I nating in consequence of the dry, hard earth. The planting interest is rep rescnted to be very backward and unu. promising.-ingstree S(ar. t We learn from the officers of the steamer Katie, which arrived from Augusta yesterday afternoon, that the section of country lying between Lita tie Hell and Burton's, Ferry, on the Savannah river, was- vi6ited by a severe hail storm on Tuesday aftor noon. The stones, some of which are represented to have been as large as eggs, were lying on the ground two hours after they fell. They injured 'cotton and corn considerably.-Savan. nah Advertiser. Bacon on Time. Everything now a days is 6on time-to planters," except the plant. era themselves. They are sadly be. hind time I I With the advertise nents of our daily papers as a guide, it appears that about the first of the present month, there were nenrly two ulillion pounds of bacon for sale in this city alone-nearly one thousand tons-and a large proportion of it ad vertised for sale "on' time." Bacon is obap enough to live on, and has been so for a y.3ar. Bacon "on time,' is far dearer, since commission for ad vancing, acceptance, dealers' profits, interest, aid purcentnge for ri6k are I all to be added to the piesent cash value. The planter who falls a prey to these charges will Bnd it dear living, Yet the poor planter must a not starve to avoid dear living; and * what can he do but bu.y "on time" " when he has no cash, and no meat at home? E The matter becomes serious. The a majority say they cannot raise hogs *at homne, on account of thieves, or c holera, or some ether cause. Yet we a do knew there are many planters who do raise meat at home in abundance. ' There are one or two at least, or more in every county in Georgia, who arc ths suo9sful and thrifcy. This is a enough evidence to prove that the thing is possible, and that our people need not send to the \Veat for bacon *"on time," unless they willfully neg. i bet their own resources. No doubt *t it l necessary to use more care and pains in hog raising than before the war, to save our bacon from Radical thieves. And it is certainly neces 0eary that we raise corn, which may Sbe done if enough of it is planted and worked. Pot atoes, peanuts. and arti oikes are valuable helps in making pork, and all these may be had with ease, if only the necessary work be Idone. Surely this great question of the meat aupplyi for the South needls attention. It nag'been neglected anad overlooked, and Deeds now to be re vived. The millions we send West to pay for meat can be saved at home at a far less cost, if our own people will make it a part of their businoss to do so--Banner of thes Souths &r Planters Journal.
