The Wild Mnll of Arizona,
Noar the lodge wherein we wore
qu trtered was to tepee, or wigwam,
of a vonerable lo-king medicine man,
who, having aicertained that we be
longed to the une profession, manli
fested a stoical but unwistukable in
terest in our uelfaro. An opportu
mity soon occurring, we exercised, a
bad spirit from the liver of a young
chief. In short we chocked a severo
attack of chills and fever but, it still
I"nmains a mystery to that gray head
ed savant why the blue pilli pro
ducod the effect, for he evidently
mistook then for buckshot. He was
surprised at this novel manner of ad
ministering them. If ie adopts our
practice the bowels of his peole will
in truth be heavy, and will yearn to
words the medicine man. It was
frot this venerable man that we
learned through our interpreter the
cause of the bitter and unrelenting
enmity toward all white men. Thus
the legend runs :
Many winters ago the young men
of the tribe who had been to the
Southward brought back strange tales
from the tribes which lived upon the
shores of the great salt water. Large
vessels with white and wide-spread
skins above thein had appeared, and
they wore filled with white men who
wore long knives and shining
breast plates, dug in the ground
and washed the earth in search of
yellow lumps. As the months wore
on, Aetories came of great cruelties
practiced by these, ien upon all those
who offended them, and naught would
satisfy them but gold. Soon a mes
sage came that the strangers would
visit the tribe for the purpose of be
stowing upon them valuablo presents
in return for the privilege of passing
through their country. The place of
meeting was in the bond of a deep
and narrow valley, where the rocks
formed a natural amphitheatre and at
the appointed day the tribe, to a
man, proceeded to the place with
their women and their young. The
strangers had already arrived, and
vast piles of the promised gifts lay
COvered with a canvas.
Thtole indians were instructed to
gather it a dense unas at a particular
point, while the wonderful strangers,
with banners streaming, trumpets
braying, and armor flashing back
sunlight, foried a scone not soon to
be forgotten by the simple red man.
The medicine men of the whites, in
long, flowing robes with crosses and
other emblems, performed soto
istratgc and mysterious rites. But in
an instantt all was changed. At a
given signal a dead silence prevailed.
Tho canvas was snatched from its place
revealing iron tubes on wheels.
Again the trumpets sounded, and
thunders and lightniugs and sulphu
routs flames filled tie valley. The
dead and dying filled the air with
hr'eks and ories which no cannon nor
musketry nor trumpet could drown.
Then came the charge of horsemen
with their swords cleaving through
the eagle's feathers and painted scalp
lock, and the pikemen following fin
ished the work of butchery. But few
of the tribe escaped, and they fleeing
to the mountains nourished tho
wnemory of this inhuman wrong. As
the tribe increased al ,wly with years.
the story was told to the children,
and deep iln their hteart of hearts was
gainted a desire for vengeance, and
in their weak way, at every season, j
tuuot and ptlace, have they visited the.
Itunishmnent upon their trad itionary
enemies, atnd with what mteasure they
meted, so has it beeni measured unto
themt again. Such is the legendl, as
we heard it, andl thle flashing eyes of
the "old man eloquent" told how well
'ie had learned the lesson. Doubtless
it has munch of the truth in its origin.
The Spanish invader believed in comn
i Isory civilizition and exemplilled
his crced upon all occasions. Tradi,
dition says that this armiy never re
turned to 'their vessels, internal,
dissensions divided them into bands,
disease attacked thenm, and the na
tives comtpleted at the stake the work
of extermination.
Truth Stronger than Fl'tioni.
