Fire.
* An alarm of fire was sounded
about 10 o'clock on Monday night
last, which was found to procced
from a disreputable "bull" on "Gul

cendiary. The fire was extinguished
bef6re any damage w" done.
St. Luke's (Episcopal) Church,
Charleston. was robbed some time
since.
Ghaileston experenced a severe
storni on last Friday. The water
covered the streets several inches.
The CheA.tr Reporter chronicles the
death of Mr. Jonas Rader.
Since last report fe havu had more
rain and gloomy weather.
The citizens of Chaileston are us
iag carbolic acid gas as a disinfeo
tant.
Charleston papers report only 18
deaths for the week ending 10th inst.,
against 34 for the same pariod last
year.
Twelve steamers coiposing the fire
department of Charleston) have been
ordered out by the authoi-ities for the
purpose of draining the cellars.
A disturbance ocourred in Sumter
on Monday nvening, 21st instabt, be
tween a pat-ty of negroes, during which
three of the latter were wounded.
One of the soldiors received a pistol
shot wound in the leg. The matter is
to undergo investigaition.
We had a splendId rain yesterday,
too late howevor, to do much good.
The cotton and corn crops arm almost
lost.
T1he Charlestosn Courier records the
death of Mrs. Mary Draton, a native
of that city, at the~ advanced ago of
102 yearsj two months and five days.
Much siekness is reported in Char
ton.
b..- By reference to another column
it will be seen that Mr. Gooding will
shortly receive a fine lot of stock from
Kentucky. He tells us that among
the lot are some extra fine harness
horses, which will add materially to
thoso handsome "turn-outs" manu
famctired at his shops near his stable.
Our readers will do well to call on
Mr. Gooding.
Arrest or Deserters.
Fr1ank von Kretsehmann, Angelbort
Stambler and George H~odder, desert
era from the garrison at this place,
were arrested in Chmrleston last Sa.
turday by officer Truall and Sergeant
llutler. The two former were on
board the steamer James Adger,
botmnd for Newt York, and the latter
on a Baltimoi'e steamer, at the time
of their arrest. They are now in
prison at Columbia, whore they will
be tried by court martial for deser
tion.
Valusabale Lots 101' sale.
It will be observed by an advertise
mnent in to-daya NF.WS, that Mr. S. C.
Mlackoroll of Blackstoek, about six,~
teen miles from Winni bro, offors fot
sale, six or more line lots, situate and
fronting the Charlotte, Columbia andl
Augusta Rail Road. A splendid op
portunity is offered to thioso wishing
to invest in something real, as we un
derstand the citizens of that section
are exerting themselves in raising
funds for building a depot at Black
stock, and have suceseded in raising
quite a large sum for the purpose.
The depot will undoubtedly add ma
terially to the value of the lots. See
card for particulars.
