From a etter of Mr. A. 0. Kauf. mann, of Charlevton, S. C., to the Wall Street Journal, New York, in regard to Southern Securities, fir in vestment, we extract the following remarks in regard to the above road : "It is in place to mention here the difficulties which encompassed this road, imnmediately after the terimina tion of the recent struggle, which for four long years distractt d our country, To borrow, from the language of it. President in his second ainual report, "It was in debt; by far the great er portion of it was destroyed ; with out fund., without credit or equip. ue't." The only alternatives left with the Cumpany, were to abandon the road to its creditors, or borrow money for its reconstruction. The former was ruin; the latter was pruo. ticable only by a pledge of the private property of its Directors, then fear. fully reduced by lesie incidental to the war. To make such a loan, with society in the chaotic on:lition as it stood at that time, was a fearful ven ture, but under the lead and advice of i'reaident Johnston, they did not hesitate. The money was raised, and the road rebuilt and restocked. President Johnston is one of those boldi progressive, persevering spirits, in whose lexicon there is no such word as fail. His prompt action at this critibal turn in the ' history of the road; vras the moavis of saving its stockhdlds thei'r proporty, which otherwise would have proved a total wteck. Thi is to be as-cribed to bis unconsing e.nergg and business tact. And here I -could remark en passant that it is the beam ple of such men, which has raised the South from her iiruifrath bond ition; give hope to the desponding, cdntldence to the wavering, andi disproved by the stern and irrefutable "logic of facts," the miserable chparges so often preferred against Seuthferners, that they are a nation of drones.
