How to Deal with'the South.
Sonator Sawyer, having been twit.
ted on tlie floor of the Senate, the
other day, with an "ardor and zeal of
frieidshiip for the late rebels," re
plied in a speech marked by dignity,
foro and independence. In the
courso of his remarks, ho said :
In our practioal rohitions v.!i 'lie
massos of white men in the '.etes
lately in rebellion, %.U must lo&i at
them as they now stand, amd by ti'
light of present ovents, rtther than by
the terrible glaro of the flros of the
great strugglo through whi.:h we have
passed. We i1uust, in brief, ''let by
gones he 1by-gones." I would never
for a moment fotget the misery caus
ed by the rebellion. I would never
for a momttent coaso to discritninate
lotweon the patriotisma which led
mighty hosts to offer up their lives to
the causo of the Union and the dis
loyalty which led other hosts to wage
war against tie Union. Lot the lon
ors of the Itopublic ever follow those
brave and loyal men who saved the
nation ; let our children and children's
ohildren learn to speak the praises of
the patriots who in the halls of legis.
Iotiion, on a thousand battle-fields on
rivOr, lako aid ocean, gave their
minds, their energies and their lives
to t-hu holy causo of national integri
ty.
But, Mr. President, the question
on wi ich I was sieaking is a question
of how to ical with a great practical
sulbjeCt of statesmanship ; how we
shall best reincorporate into practical
andt1 harmvioniotus relations with the
Federal tGoverninent, the masses of the
white min of the South ; how soonest
we shall mako them enter into and'
share our own faith in the bencti
cenee of this government ; how soon.
est to weaken the strength of their
attachinont to the "lost uause ;" how,
it, the 1tost completo way, to imbuo
them with a conviction that the Uni
ted States is their country as Well as
ours, and that to it they must look as
their chief object of loyalty rather
th in to the section whoso causo was
lost.
On this question it Is my misfortune
to differ with my distinguished friend
from Mliohigan as to what, is the true
policy. On this question I do not
seek a guide for my stops in the bitter
ness, the et tiony, the hatreds begot.

TO PHYSICIANS,
Naw YoUK, August 15th, 1808.
Allow me to call your attention to my
Preparation of Compound Extract
Buchu.
The component parts are BUClU, LONG
LEA F, CUBE11S, JUNIPER ;15EI11IR8.
MoDE OF PtrPAIATION.-Bnchu, in va
cuo. Juniper Berries, by distillation, to
form a fine gin. Cubebs extracted by dis
placement with spirits obtained from Juni
per Ierries; very little sugar is used, and
a small proportion of spirit. It is more
palatable than any now in use.
Buchu, as prepared by Druggists, is of a
(lark color. It is a plant that. emite Its
fragrance; the action of a flame destroys
this (its active principle), leaving a dark
and glutinous doooction. Mine is the color
of ingredients. The Duchu in my prepara,
tion predominates; the smallest quantity of
the other ingredients are added, to prevent
fermentation, upon inspection, it will be
found not to be a Tincture, as made in
IPharmacopoea, nor is It a Syrup-and
therefore can be used in cases where fever
or inflamrna ion exist. In this, you have
the knowledge of the iugredientv and the
mode of preparation.
Hoping that you will favor it with a tri
al, and that upon inspection it will meet
with your approbation,
