gentleman just arrived from Matba's
V incyard, that a party of Gay Head
Indians went off, yesterday, to a
steamer, two miles from the landing,
and found her to be an iron-clad war
vessel, carrying eighteen steel guns.
They fraternized with the steward of
the steamer, and on reaching shore,
reported that she was a Cuban priva
teer. They saw between decks a
large body of men ; the steward say
ing there were 300. The steward also
said her armor plating was four inch
es thick. A large schooner was lying
alongside; the steamer meanwhile
throwing off a large volume of smoke,
as if to conceal the schooner. The
steamer is supposed to be 5,000 tons.
