THE FAIRFIED HERALD WINNSO11110, S. C. " Wednesday Morning, Oct. 14, 1808. Resportes, Willims & Co., Prop Criminal Indifference. Tlio most memorable of Solon's laws declared the citizen dishonorod and disfranchised, who, in any politi oal contest, stood aloof and took uneitlier side. A similar sentiient should pervade the citizons of' every repiblic. The people areI alone to be trusted wit-h tle sacred trust, of their owH liberty, and unless they guard it., the forilns of freedomi may r.em1ain, but its spirit, will havo fled. Every voter must do his duty, lie iist inform himlself of the issues depending upon his vote, and should spaoud useful in. tformation amouig his neighbors. The hlabit, however, of voting simply with a party or faction, is the fruitful soiree of Corruption. Issues tre coIn tinually changing, aid votes should be decided by the important issues at stake, and by them alone. When, however, tho truth is clearly on ono sido, a it is so frequently is, and that side is, as it abmost invariably is, in a minority, tn upright citizen can only voto in one way, and can oiy do his duty fully by active exertion upon that side. T1his is our preciso condi tion at present. Never before were snch tremendous i.stes, big with tho fate of millions yet unborn, presented to tho suffrago of a people. 'Tho decision involves every conceivablo interest. It will determino the fate of the negroo, the character of Southorn civilization, and the permanence or disappearance of 11epublican institutions. Yet with such interests at stako, a little rain was enough last spring to keep over eight limidred registered votors in Fairfild District away from the polls ! What shall we say ? What madness! What folly I What apathy I What criminal indifl'oreico I How often have we soon national questions decided in the Senate and House of Representatives by a single vote ! I fave we already forgotten the impeachment, of President Johnson, and Its failuro by a single voto ? Im it not of' the utmost importance to overcome the Radical two-thirds ina. jority in the House, so as to sustain Seymour or Grant in thoir votoes1 Now this may depoend, if Radmal bragging as to how the election is go. ing, is true on the voto of the Repro sentative to Congress from our DA.s. triot. If wo cannot elect Seymour, a. we hope to (o, lot uIS pepar to sus tain, (he vetovs of 11rant. Shameful Apathy. A peopile who will not keep watch anid guard over their liberties, are ccr tain scoon to lose them, anmd by nll ao counts from without and by observa tion within South Carolina, and mnor< especially within this J)istict, we ar< more than o.heir portions of thoUinlon letti, polit les t ake its course, and that cour'so is our ruin It may be well to say, let politics alone, but un. fort.unately in America, silence or in. act ion is constriued into consent, atnd if we do not meddle with polities t< control it for our good, piolitics is corn tain to meddle with us to do us harm WYe seem to have sunmk somowhat into that abject state of mind whmiol distinguishes the people of Mexico aund the &outhm America Reopublics, where the people are incapable of comubina' tion upon aniy wihlosome plan of per. manent. solf government, but breal forth at short intervals, into violon uprisings against successive forms o mis-government and tyranny. It i perhaps duo to the mongrel element which enter into their political conisti tiution. So much the more earnes should we be, therefore, to ejoet suel eloemnts, if possible, from our own. In Fairfield District at the hast election, ever eight hundred register ed voters did not vote at all It is ceritain, that, had they and oth, era like them exerted themselves South Carolina, like Mississippi, couli have defeated the so-called eonstitu, tibn, and would have escaped th<. $150,000 expense that negroc govern ment has already cost us, in the more items of mileage and per diem, as wel] as the, prospootivo taxation at the rate of .a million and more annually. Yot have, follow-citizens, let politica alone, but polities has reiprocated b~ purigng its hand.- into your pocket. B~od tislesson, and at once. .'T6 eoy vqtor oomny out~ in No y abere mnlo*s he deros to b e -e . hrb t* dtty. We onti, iitit proper ~~feth~the Su~t~to.efr'egis ~ t ct4aint the 1,aclon A.. $9 t u e hnge tion and we give it below. Let it be ronieibered, too, that others who 1ould Uot then register, ean do so now. Study the figures, and go earn ostly to work. The vote in two Districts may be be recapitulated as follows: FIRST DIsTRIOT. For constitution, 17,902 Against constitu.tion, 6379 Not voting, 8302 Total. 14,099 Radical majority to be over come, 3203 'OUnTi1 DisTniCT. For constitution, 12,978 Against constitution, 8996 Not voting, 7690 Total, 16,686 Expoeted Democratic majori ty, 3708 Surely this is an encouraging and inpiriting condition of affairs. In one Congressional Di'strict we have a rousing Democratic majority secured to us ; and in a second there is but a majority of about 3000 to overcome In a total voto of more thian 30,000. Tho First and Fourth Districts will, then, send Domocrats to rap at th< doors os Coilgress in March next, if the people in thoso Districts do thei duty in November as thoroughly and nobly as they did in the late county olections. Pink Again, 'ink, the interesting New Yorl correspondent of the Charleston Cou rier, who commenced in September t< change color from pink to Iluo, fron blue to bluer, and from bluer to black has, with October, resumed one more his roscate hues, and become Pini again. Well done, New York Domo orats I Continue to watch Pini closely, and dino and wine him well Keep an eye on the corresponden from the metropolis.
