The Election,
Oi Tuesday morning, as ordered,
the polls were opened in Winnsboro,
for a. vote tipon the ratifihation of the
Radical Constitution and for certain
lices. At an early hour crowds bo
gan to coigregate upon the streets,
and until after midday, it sensilily iu
reased, until the town was well
crowded with at throng, of exceedingly
dusky hue. Kluch interest was mani
fosted and s.nne ecitoinent.. Both
parties workod with-a will. U roups
were viibliy. everywhere, listenibg to
appeals-and arguments, and we espe
cially noticed that all. our. loading
citizens exerted themselves- earnestly
to impress the colored voters with the
dangers of the radicalism .thait is about
to b'e fastened'upon us-- all'aike; No
disturbance interrupted the election,
and indeed all passed quietly enough,
if we except some noise and a pugna
cious banter or two on the part of one
or two intoxioatod'eolorod voters.
After the polls were closed, the sa
ble crowd, many of whom still linger
od upon the streets, vented their hila
rious spirits in ,c kind of friendly me
loe, in whioli quio a number took
part., li-respeotive of party. 'TIhis
looked somewhat threntening for a
time ; but was eusily quelled by the
Sheriifand his, assistants without in
j.ry to any one;
At the close of the day, about, live
liundred and twen ty-fivo votes had
li00n polled. What the particular re
sult was could not be known ; but we
know this and we hold it ia hopeful
augury of the future, that a large
number of colored men. convinced of
the atrocity of this wh'ole matter
voted openly and above board, with
the Democratic party. We don't
know what proportion ; but enough
at least to show that the colored men
of the country are not totally blind to
the safety of the State. It also d;,
monstratos that the whitte men of the
State despairod without cause. With
two weeks more -of good, honest, hear
ty work. of .kind, earnest oexplanation,
radicalism would todalay. be- in
South Carolinarwhere it will be in the
whole South in a very few years from
this date. A noticeable point Was
that most of the most intulligent col
ored men of our acquaintance, of the
highest order, who have property and
interests at stake, voted with the
Democratio party. And so ;t will al
ways be. Capital and intelliencue
can not afford to be radical.
