There has been toodiay n-oro excitement, speculation, misapprehension and confusion of facts, in cousequence ot' the removal of Mr. Stanton fron the office of Secretary of War, than has been observed, probabiy, heretofore in any Important occnrrence in the captnl. The facts are, that the President's aetion in all that has been (one to -dity is purely of a civil character, and in nowise partakes of the military. IlIs purpose is simply to remoto one olicer p.id apf oint another ad ignferim ; and if the first refuses to obey the order, then, probably, to test the mitter by regular legal proceeding in the civil court, or, getting potsession of tle office through his ad intrim appointee, to compel Stanton to seek his reniedy by a writ of puo toarranto, or other procedare that. may )e lawful, to bring the tatter before, the courts. Mr. Stanton inquires, civally: "Do you propose to take immediate possession, or stalit hainve time to remove my papers." Thomas re p lied : "I am now Secretary ad interim, and ave possession. You canl hare sutlicient time to remove your papers." And so tie interview ended. Afterwards the l'residenti notified the [enate, as a matiter of cour tesy what, ho.had done.
