largely an indoor work save for the*
gathering of the mulberry leaves^on
which the worms feed. When they
have attained their full size' they
proceed to spin their own bed in

BARNWELL’S MOSQUITOES.
The breed that inhabits the mar
shes at New Jersey have won a
nation wide reputation for savagery.
Local tradition has it that those
which live in that section of Virgin
ia lying between Chesapeak bay and
the Atlantic sometimes* attain th’e
size of blackbirds. During a ~ re
cent summer the breed that lives in
the marshes near Charleston suc
ceeded in stinging to death a' man
who one nighjt was left to: guajrl a
motor boat. We cannot * ekpect
our mosquitoes to win first priz^in
competition wjth the above types,
but if ft goes pn as it hasf started
out thifCyear we may -yet have
hopes? —

“I don’t belivve a word of it”. For
thirty years the people have been
shown the relation between malaria
and mosquitoes, but they would
rather be sick with it and sometimes
be crippled for labor and sometimes
die than to believe it. The mos-
qtrtttr-has an inconvenient bite, but
his vice is that it Is a vital Rtt tir
the chain of malaria transmission.
Contrary to general belief that ma
laria is inhaled from fogs and night
air, science tells that the mosquito
is the only agency of transmission
that ha« ever been found.. When
the mosquito is destroyed the ma
laria goes also. The malaria is

When tbe average reader run-
through his paper arid says “There
is nothing in the paper this week,”
the fault is not in the office, but in
people like himself wliYi do not think
enough their community, church,
school, or people to let the other
folks know what they are doing. No
newspaper can help any community
that isnt willing to Le helped by the
paper.
The reader of the paper should
see in it the only opportunity to put
his farm, his neighbors, family and
general community life on the map.
We should be^ ashamed to hide our
lights under a bushel so that people
without the coOntj'-should have to
tell us that they have never heard
anything about the community In
which w-e 3 live. Let us know what

SILK CULTURE.
The people of lower South Caro
lina may have to endure a few in
conveniences' of climate, but after
all we live in the garden spot ' of
America. It wfil be hard to find a
better place than <$irs. We can
raise almost anything here that can
be raised elsewhere and raise it with,
a profit to ourselves.
Just bow our people are, or ought
to be concerned with how to beat
the boll weevil. 'While passing
through a cotton mill in Greenville
ha week ear attention was direct
ed to hanks of yellow silk brought
■af from Japan. This dlkl
a depressed tin gutter,-in fact any-1
thing that w ill hold water for a few j
days will insure a large increase of j
mosquitoes. These are always fol- j
lowed by fever. Mosquitoes can’ be
cleaned up, but only by depriving
them of water in which to breed.
Can we really afford to pay the
Pjice we have paid in ‘disease,, labor
shortage, dcatir-and—-priier things
for the privilege of having 4 njos-
quitocsj?- \\ e uiusi either clear up
now or pay up later in the year.
