BARNWELL COUNTY MAN
EDITS CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE
Former Barnwell County Man Makes
Goioj on Methodist Journal.
’ Barnwell County is fast be-
con'.i'tj; a part of the Capital
City. There are many of her
ritixens now residents of “Co
lumbia ; among whom we find
Rev: William 0. Kirkland,
Editor and Manager of the
Southern Christian Advocate,
the oldest Methodist paper pub
lished in any of the .Southern
States and which has been
moved from place to place mak
ing its home in many towns in
South Carolina and Georgia.
Since Kev. Kirkland ba9 been
elected editor and general man
ager, -its success is worthy of
note: He has paid all > the in
debtedness and purchased a ten
thousand dollar home iu the
city of Columbia at 1220 Taylor
Street.
Rev. Kirkland is a son of Dr.
N, F. Kirkland, Sr., ex-county
treasurer of Barnwell County,
a gentleman of the old school;
loved and admired by all cit
izens of Barnwell, Bamberg and
the tmw county of Allendale.
The Southern Christian .Ad
vocate is a neat anti newsy six
tern page paper, strongly ed
ited! Barnwell county should ana que

j Methodist Conference no doubt
realize* that the election of Rev.
Kirkland as editor and manager
was a wise and timely act.

DEATH OF LEE ALLEN EASTERLING.
The death of Lee Allen,
younger son of Mr. and Mrs. B.
L. Easterling, pnrSunday night,
was p great/ shock and lias cast
a gl6om over this city and the
entire community.^ - ..
Leo jUleh was taken with /in
fluenza about two weeks ago.
A trained nurse was secured
who, with the physicians of this
city, did evqry.thing that could
have beeu.done. KvMi thelen-
der hand of a gentle mother
and'the kind hand of a loving
father could not stay the hand
of deatli but from the first of
his ’illness he gradually grew
worse until the cud came.
Lee Allen was one of the
finest young men of Barnwell
County. He was a dutiful son,
always doing that which he
thought would please and grati
fy his parents. He was a truth
ful, honest, honorable and high-
toned young mau,- loved and
respected by all who knew him.
Sometimes we wonder why it
is that life for such is so short
and agaiu “1 ponder, that it
dawns upon me that life ns bu
it dream ;
The more I dwell upon this
thought, the plaiuer does it
seem.
We sleep, and o'er our senses
throng a host of fancies vugue
and queer; __
fey seem as real, as true as
life- with walking though
they disappear, i
Existence is a mystery- wha
more, who cau aay?
Men are bur fleeting shadows
who soon must pass away..
Sleep lias its world of joy hoi
woe -iu dreams we seem to
kuow and feel.
Such visions vanish with the
inorn--are not our lives as
much unreal?
i
Yes, so it- is, through all our
day*, that all we say or think
or seem
Is bu: a phantom, but a myth—
- Life is a d.ieam within a
dream.,
The soul is resting through the
night ; day dawns for us with
parting breath;
AiuLwe shall ail awake at last,
from this, our sleep, from
birth till death.”
The funeral services were

Love backed by savings
Makes our dreams come true.
How do you like this one:
„. Oh Valentine, my Valentine,
1-rovor and Tatriot I combine ;
TffTavTing my suit to make me liolder,
-L ucie Sam has stamped this folder.
This one about the hope chest ought to make an im

The hope chest’s full of dainty wear.
Of linen sewed with loving care, * 1

This token of the way I build,
To keep my chest forever filled,
Shall bring to you,
Love’s greeting true— t
My Valentine.
Here's one to send to the baby :
I’m sending greetings, Baby Miue,
A Thrift Stamp for a Valentine,
• I kuow you’d say, if you could speak,
You'd like another every week.
Here’s oue that shows one can-’t live on love alone :
Sweets to the sweet, when I wa9 young,
Interpreted a bashful tongue;
And ro«es for my love, when older,
Were Valentines, as I grew bolder."
But love must live and love must eat,'
And so this Valentine, mv Sweet,
Is symbol, though an humble gift,
That love, fo last, must live by thrift.
And this oue contains a subtle proposal:
I 've loved von since the age of nine,
\ And so 1 send this Valentine--*
A Thrift’Sta tup-* it will tell you how,
Twill grow if you start saving now.
And when you have sixteen, you see,
A big War Saver it will be,
And when we have enough.of those,
We ll buy a "house—and then dear knows—.
You'll simply have to marry me!
