In times of peace it has been
extremely difficult to prevent
the creation of “corners” in
the necessaries of life. War
times have placed the conoum-
*er absolutely at the mercy of
the man higher up. The gov
ernment’s remedy wa« to fix the
prices beyond which various
commodities should not go. Of
course the coot of living was
unreasonably high, b«t that
wan blamed on the war. It has
been nearly three months siace
the armistice, but somehow
"prices will not come dowa, and
we are now trying to aasrram

In any case between the c on

consumer comes out the little

The competition of big busi
ness depends on a multitude of
trifles. Industralism cannot af

put by having as employees
men whose brains are dulled
and whose fingers unsteady by
reason of indulgence in drink.
In suits.for damages it was an
uncomfortable fact to find that
some employee had contribut-

these and the voters will decide
unanimously for the change.
Shifting the county seat
means a shifting of trade in the
various business centres of the
county. While Barnwell would
undoubtedly lose < much to
Blackville by the change, yet
the banks and stores in other
business centres in the county
will naturally fear that people
having business in the court
house will also do their trading
there. What is also needed is
a convincing argument to these
business interests that the pro
posed removal will increase

This is especially true when we
are at war. It has been freely
admitted that in every war con
tract the government has lost
and the contractor gamed;
Our concern with the small
xonsumer who feels that. he
nhould share in the general
prosperity. A case in point is
the disparity between the price
• per pound of raw* and manufac
tured cotton. With cotton at
15 cents a pound a certain mill
charged the wholesaler $3.50 a
dozen for a certain grade of
underwear. When cotton rose
to 30 cents the mill charged for
the same underwear $18.00 per
dozen. We are now told that
nince the price of manufactur
ed cotton has decreased in
-priet raw cotton must fall also.
When as a fact the mills re
ceive four times as much per
dng as the farmer does for rais-

ing it. We are told the govern
ment fixed the price on its own
contracts with the milts. It
uras recently brought to the at
tention of a senate committee
that in spite of government
price fixing certain meat pack
ers- made larger profit* *last
.year than ever before.
Price fixing may be necessary
to win the war, but the time
lias come to unscramble the
eggs. Some diseases' carry
their own antidote. It may be
that having learned the lessons
decided that drinking wasn’t
quite the proper thing for po
lite society.- Restrictions were
laid on it.in an ever increasing
degre#» with-the tvsuR that
found but small comfort from
the grandchildren of those men
who believed that the decanter
and the mint bed were indis
pensable to the hospitality that
belonged to every well regulat
ed home. .
In all of the years of slavery
in the South the negro and
whiskey furnished only a small
problem. Released from whole
some restrictions the brother in
black furnished the South one
of the 'strongest arguments
against the sale of whis
key. The automobile and
cheap whiskey made^ a bad
combination for peaceful way
farers on our country roads.
From the news reports
I Blackville appears to have been
I eminently successful in its con
vincing of Springfield that
Blackville should be the county
seat; it also needs to convince
certain sections of Barnwell
county who must travel longer
distances to the county seat, if
changed, that a ride to Black
