• LQ'S OF $50,000 A YEAR.
Columbia. Oct. 18.—Losses
of livestock on railroad rights
?>f way in the Southeast are
^double the losses in the West
4*nd three times the losses in
(he Northeast* In South Caro
lina, alone the livestock losses
from accidents on railroad
rights ,>f way amount to more
than $50,000 a year. TheTnon-
et**rv loss is not of primary con
sideration, how ever,"as is point
ed out. by the State Council of
Defense. The loss n money
may be replaced, but the loss in
meat and leather, both , of
Which are so sorely needed at
this time, cannot be replaced.
To cope with this problem,
which is ^>ne of South Caro
lina’s war problems, the Coun
cil of Defense has set to work
to Wage a campaign-to awaken
interest throughout the State.
There will be named at each
railroad station in the State a
representative of the Council of
Defense, whose duty will be to
urge upon owners oL livestock
.the necessity of keeping cattle
and other stock off the rights
a/ way where they are exposed
to danger. In addition, every
person who has filed a claim
against the railroads for live
stock killed during the past
two years is being written to
and asked hereafter to exercise
all care to prevent other losses
from resulting. The railroads
are cooperating in this move
ment, and will piaster the walls
and depots and other buildings
along their lines with posters
furnished by the Council of De
fense calling attention to the
livestock-losses and urging care
and precaution.
An effort wiU be made,
through t.he machinery of the
Council of Defense, to secure
Potter and stricter stock laws
where the present laws are in
adequate
exist.

•'Fhave been engaged In the retail drag hu«il-

time I have seen many patent medicines come
into use, flourish for one or two years and then
gradually disappear. There are very few of
these remedies that possess enough rent merit tb insure them Tong"
life. Peruna has always been a good seller with us, with a marked
inerease from yea# to year. The change in the formula some years,
ago, by the addition of the slightly laxative properties, has made It
a rellnble remedy for constipation and for folds. If taken hourly in
tablespoonful doses by adults It- will break up the worst eold In two
•r three days' time. I take, pleasure in urging my brother druggists
to recommend it for these two ailments.”
