A WONDERFUL HEN
Mr. A. P. Hettison, of Allen-
djde, S. C M has informed us that
he has a lien about one and a
half years old that is doing her
“bit” to help win the war. In a
period of eight weeks this re
markable hen hashatchedlwelve
chickens, weaned them, laved
Seventeen eggs and at present is
the proud mother ol ten more
chickens. This hen was raised
up as a pet and besides showing
her patriotism by producing such
a quanity ofJood stuffs seems to
have caught the military air. At
a given command while feeding
she will throw her head back
and hold it erect until the signal
one, two, three, four, is given be
fore she will continue to, finish
eating her food.
The mother of this hen raised
three litters of chickens last year
and the pullets.from one litter of
these chickens have laved seven
ty-five eggs this year from which
sixty-two chickens have been
sold.

him. I hope -to get a letter fronj-
him (Brunk) within a few days.
He wanted to pay me ar visit
wliile 1 was at Camp Let- but I
could not get any time off .to*
be with him, 8o wrote and told
him not to come. You see we
were preparing to moy:- wheo
lie wrote me that he would hkt>-
to see me.
A«u, glad to know that mel
ons brought a good price this
season.' liow ninny carloads did-
you handle? And how many
did Norniau dispose of? I im
agine Ed also pUknted some r
didn’t lie? By tlie way, I wiat*
Ed a letter a few days ago and
am anxious to kaow if lie gete
it. Of course, it was intended
for Norman, *Su'<he, Aunt Uosa-
and 'Grandma too but I ad
dressed it to Ed. I Riiyt thought
he would, like to get a letter
from somebody in France. Tell
him if they raise the age limit
l may shake hands with him
on French soil yet!
The country here is simply
grand! I have never seen any
so beautiful. And every foot oi
the .soil serins $> be cultivated.
But I don’t see any corn and
cotton like we have downsouth f
it’s wheat and other grain
(excepting corn), potatoes,
l>e;is, beans, etc. And also
vineyards. They make lots of
wine, -And no dinning table-
seems to be complete without
a bottle of wine sitting on it.
I heard one man remark that
there were several- million
people in .France who had lietmE
ta-red water at all, exceptny
putting it .in wine or some
other drink .to Weaken it.:
1 have quite a'- few friend?
over here 'from Sumter and
other, place* in S. (J.. v but liav*
not been- able s > fat to locate
any of them. 1 hope latter- on
that I will^see some o,f tlieln.
AV Ian 1 sailed from tlie
Tinted State> the boat I was
