Needed Legislation.
This column lias nothing to
do with, the selection of those
—- —■ ■" 1 ■ r— Ut 4- ;
who are to represent us in the
next legislature. That is preem
inently the privilege of the
▼oters. What we can do with
pleasure i9 to call attention
to legislation that lias been
found wise in other states.
The rapid and widespread
use of automobiles has shown
the public the necessity of
adequate legislation to protect
the public as well as the dis
creet auto drivers. Legislatures
including our own have tinkered
at laws concerning automobiles.
In the main the^o laws are
honored in the breach more
than the observance. More
people are killed each yearAn
this state by automobiles than
by railroacfs. Aged and infirm
persons including those whose
hearing is defective are apt to
•d>e the innocent victims of reck
less driving. Ladies and
children have as much right to
cross streets as machines, but
great care is needed to avoid
an accident. On one hand the
speed limit prescribed in some
, towns is so low that the batteries
Ouf white illiteracy of today
is due to a Jack of proper

The insane should have every
attention that- will provide for
their unforunate heeds. The
hrilf witted' constitute a 'real
menace to the state. Many of
them are a constant expense
and drain upon families hardly
able to carry them. We used to
know something of the value
of a slave to hi9 owners. We
however lose annually millions
of dollars from preventive
diseases. These and many other
needed reforms require money.
Because the man who get9
something for nothing gener
ally pay for more than he gets.
The legislature should take a
comprehensive view of taxes,
see that each mad. bears' his
proper share of equalized taxes,
and then levy enough to do
what is needed.
Police or pence officers
should be entirely removed
from politics. Since they are
paid with public funds no
other than the public should
have 1 anv claim on their time
or services. Far seeing men
know that when some of the
men have returned from the
theatre of war that one of our
greatest ueetLs will be the preven
tion of crime.' Mob violence
will not secure this. We will
then confront entirely new
conditions of public order, and
old methods will be outworn.

Wo are finding on eveK* hand
evidence of the fact that wb\are
engaged in war. We are paying
more than ever for the necessa
riesof^fte* it begins, to appear „
as if it took more than money to
get the everyday needs supplied.
This-i<^pnj^kularly~ true of the
fuel situation.“We.folks in - this
part of tne South are ble-sed
with good winter climate, but
even tvitli* that we muss have
fuel. C '
Last winter we were warned to
use as much wood as possible to
sjpive coal. The idle Mondays de
creed by the fuel administra
tion were used*by many'^to cut
and haul wood for domestic pur
poses. This hardly met the emer
gency. We are also warned to
otdeV our coming winter’s sup
ply of coal as e'arly as possible.
This we havejdoiie by securing
the necessary blanks as soon as
they were in the hands of the
county fuel administrator.
These have been iii the hands
of the local coal dealers for some
time. These dealers report that
they have been told by -ihe
mines,from which they deal that
they have sold up to their, limit.
The state administrator say-
that perhaps a ear may he found
at tin* mines. But tlie ueal situ
ation-is that the consumer who
has done Ins best to esecure his
fuel for next winter see,s no pros.
