[The patriotic spirit was housed to the highest pitch, and very few of either race required iCging to tnaue them/ contribute liberaUy to t.he cause they hold dear. . • The flag-raising occurred on Thursday the 23rd. The^cotten plafform was beautifully de corated for the occasion. The speakers- were, Col. D. S. Henderson, of Aiken, and Rev. Janies Thomas, of Colorado, who is now one of the chaplains at Camp Hancock. Both of these gentlemen, who are eloquent speakers, were listened. to* by a large aiidAppreciative audience.. At the conclusion of the addresses, a flag 10x20 feet uvas carried by ' twelve little » • girls to a pole more than. 80 feet tall which had been erected on the corner of Dr, W. C. Siiiith’s lawn, right in the cen ter of the town, and was raised by Miss Hattie .Smith. It was eminently fitting that this*young lady should raise the emblem of our beloved country, since she has three brothers in tlve U. S. Navy fighting to maintain its honor. Excellent music was furnished by the Commandants Band o£. the Charleston Naval station. This btpid is composed of twenty-two young men, rnd was under the leadership of Conductor Vasella. The credit for the success of the day belongs to the- people of the town and community who gave of their time and funds so liberally. Special mention, should be made of the efforts of Capt. W. I). Black, chairman of the exercises com mittee, ami Messrs. U. Martin. J. W. Odion, Q. A. Kennedy. -Austin Lattimer ami G. W. Greene. The latter, u-ed his teams for hauling the pole and his skidder engine • for raising it. His skill and exper ience in such work was of great value LOCAL BOARD ASKS FOR CO-OPERATION OF THE M / / ' f. w f “ r- On the eve of the registration of all men who become of a^e on or be fore June 5th, 1918, the day set by th^President’s proclamation, the mem bers of the Local Boar^i for Barnwell County hatfe issued a statement in which they solicit tjie cooperation of the citizens of the county in carrying out to the letter the provisions of the Selective Service Act. It is as fol lows: ‘To the Citizens o’f Barnwell County: “As we are on the eve of another registration, in which all of your younp men who have become twenty- t. 1 ■U signed by men who; when asked sev- era! months later if they’ made cer tain statements in regard to re^is- tfant?, denied them until confronted with the records in black and whtte. Our work is yery-u^rehsant—draft-, inir the boys, who perhaps have been raised to younp frnanhood almost With in. the sound of their parents’ voices, fand sending them off to face the chances of war and pestilence is our- sad duty, and in this wy should have the help of all. This we have not had. f ‘\Ve will assure veu that in the se- lection we know no one—friend or foe, black or white—as all are treated one years of ape since June 5th, 1917,, alike, and the only jrood ( ? > that these will be required to register for mili tary sendee, we, the members of the Local Board, wish to call your atten tion to the following facts: “We are called upon by the United States Government to fill the posi tions we now .occupy. None of us sought the place—far from it. We were “drafted,” and as patriotic citi zens we obeyed the call. We don’t suppose any one envies us our job. At best it is far from pleasant, and there is no glamour in the profits, as (| each one of us sen’es without pay of any kind, whatever amount of mon ey the Government sends us being turned over to the Red Cross Chap ters in this county. “We, the Local Board, earnestly solicit the cooperation and direct as sistance of each and every good citi zen of Barnwell County in carrying out the provisions of the Selective Service Act, which if not carried out will de lay very greatly the Government in raising the large army required at this most hazardous period in our country’s history. “For the past six orieight months, j misguided relatives and friends have I aided many young men in every way j possible to evade army service. In On Wednesday- -evening a musical recital by the pupils of Miss Abbot was thoroughly enjoyed. “The Swing” song and “Don’t bite the hand that feeds "v»>u” were cheered to the echo. The second pigW the play. ‘Kentucky Belie,” was . , presented and was considered to! tl ^ 1 ;.„.\ A ' ,\ ch be the b-st ever presented in affidavits of error do is to make it harder for the Board, as we, in many instances, have to refute therfi, and this is not pleasant. ‘‘These thoughtless and erroneous affidavits are made in many instances Ly our friends, and when confronted by one sighted by eight or ten men who heretofore have never swerved from the path of rectitude Is almost a solar plexus blow. “What we want you, our friends throughout the county, to remember is this: That we are your friends and'the young man who tries to evade the draft law and thereby refuses to serve his country in this her greatest need, is not worthy of a moment’s,con sideration by any one. The slacker can be divided into three classes: The health slacker, the dependency slack er and the|jndustrial slacker.. All. of them deserve the contempt of every citizen who does his duty. “Now, fellow citizens of Barnwell County^ rally to our assistance and help us to make our work for 'the Government a splendid success. “Local Board for Barnwell County, “W.
