ticular battlo will end. This!
'-*nuch is true of the average
^eacler of war news. He is
* - carried away ,by the headlines
of his favorite paper. He reads
that such a town has been
caj tured or is in danger of be-
iug captured by his friends! and
he is elated. He ^corresponding
ly depressed w hen the boot is on
the other foot. The -larger
questions of strategy mean
nothing to him. The events
of the day loom large in his
sight, because he cannot take
a long view.
The events of the.last week
may be summed up as a breath-
ing spell for both sides when
they will feel out the plans of
opponent and forestall him if
possible. During the last tear
the A1 lies gradually^acquired
the dominatipg ridges in Bel-
y gium. They poured out their
best blood for these. Germany
then had eastern as well western-
foes to fight. Now’ that she is
released from Iiussiau pressure
she can turn and has .turned
all of her forces against the
western- front before American
forces can arrive in forces. In
almost every instance the
allied armies have been out
numbered at least four to one.
Her purpose is to wrest from
allied control these dominating
- ridges, and set the alliecfadvance
back at least two years. She has
been willing to throw’ forward
Herman soldiers', faster than
machine guns could mow them
’tlown. The Allies have had time
to ring up reserves in Flanders,
with the result that Germany
has this week paid an extremely
heavy -butcher’s bill with ,.no
corresponding gain in territory-.
The intensity of the battles for
„ the past month may be estimated

wounded and missing more t han
a quarter of a millions men.
The Germans since they have
