♦ •' T SIXTY SIXTH YEAR ESTABLISHED 1852 SIXTY SIXTH YEAR VOL. LXVI BARNWELL S. C.,THURSDAY, MARCH 14; 1918 NO. 2L LABOR ON FARMS. _LThere 13'an..old story.of the hardships ,pf those Jew9 who were required to make bricks without straw. Brick making has gotten beyond thb straw stage. But the farmer-is to* day confronted wjth labor con- ditj:ns tlyit involve hardships aliuost as great. Th > national government lias laid on toe far mery the supreme task of win ning the war by a food produc tion sufficiently large to feed our allies without stinting our selves. The farmers are urged to increase the acreage for crops of food .stuffs. The farmers are asking themselves how can larger crops be planted, culti vated and harvested whenrethe farm labor supply is smaller than it has been for years. Thi9 condition is not only local,* but almost universal. The Board of Trade andx Transportation of New York recently obtained 'the following reports on the supply of farm labor from the commissioners of agriculture in various states'.^ These are sum marized as follows 1 : Maine—Great shortage of farm labor; acreage will prob «.it>!y.. .be. reduced bjr one fourth or one third.. Texas—rMore la bor needed than ever before, but 'supply is much.below normal. Noryb Dakota—Alarming short age farmers discouraged and cannot plant for a normal crop. AYnnopt*—Shortage means a cut in production, Massachusetts— St riousysituation ; farmers can not go ahead w th only the help -of hoys and untrained workmen Connecticut-—Depressing coqdi tions; farmers may try to raise only enough for their families Rhode Island—Many will not v plant ns much as last year. New -Jersey—Farmers think that planting even the usual ■acreage wiil' bo* hazardous. Pennsyl •vaiiia-—Very great shortage o skilled farm labor ; the exodie from farms has beeji.cojjiinito.us Delaware—l'nless relief comes t!i?usuar acreage cannot be pn pared. Maryland—-The labor 'situation is acute Lack-of laboi ^ accordingly, Geo rgi a—I m p ps- isiblo to cultivate as much hind as last year^acreage. Florida— Affected by loss of negfo work- • men drawn to the .North ; hope the government-will bring Por to Ricans.r OhioY-Farmersdis- BLANK CARTRIDGES FIRED AT By Ji’8T'U s - “Douglas, my Douglas, ten der and true,” is the opening ine of a song sung silently by ihe “first run;’ of girls that come to Barnwell/ 1 V •’ ' . * + * As a matter of interest to alp incorporated; towns in the State, attention is called to an act of tlueji^st legislatiire by which the proper officials of such towns are required te provide a Regulation ballot box, into which the names of all qualified electors of the town, subject te jury duty, shall be placed, from which all juries empaneled to try cases before the town councilsshall bedrawn. This act will throw into the dis card the general practice of mak ing up a jury list at the moment to try cases before the municipal courts of the-State. Councils and clerks of the various towns would do well to secure a copy of the act for further mforma- tiou and guidance. • \ 1 - r • * • While on.fhe subject of town councils it might not be amiss to suggest that strong support by those libdies be given to their mar shallsand policemen. The turn- in*g down of au officer, who is clearly Mn the right, to let off some political or family friend, is bad work for the council and tends to discourage a capable consciencious man in the dis charge of his duties. These du ties are hardly ever agree able to tlu* officer, and when he per- formsfthem lie should be upheld Virginia— ;; acreage reduced Georgia con raged -fmtFm-thH f wit s *efHK Indiana—Probably a reduction of acreage, idle fsrenr iuCtici Illinois—The nunG beffof idle Here’S wilT probably be increased. •>' The prospeeLis that farming acreage will be greatly reduced, duringdhis yi ar by reason of the steady J&w of labor into the higher paid .industries, One YertaTh co'osequence is-Dmt Con,- gurfiers must j»ay higher prices for food. This means that the -poorer classes "will be underfed. It al-o clearly toadies ns that there .may be. so great h sC'aiudry of food crops that although we may . have the money wherc- with to buy and yet we cafinpt find tin' needed food, stuffs on * * Tlie definition of slacker., in yogue today, has been some what mixed in the''minds o many . people, and ought to be cleated up. JAerc is a stab in that direction : ~It does not by anv means fol x v low that because a mail is ex ted from army, service lie is, ne cessarily. a “slacker,” for it would be as unjust not to ex empt spme men as it is to ex empt’certain others. POTATOES.- J , Rejlsterfd Du roe Jeroey Gilts for the Boy a Every Barnwell county farmer knows how to grow sweet pota toes and there are few other crop9- that are so easily grown and furnish so much. .pah> table foQti per acre. By rea son ' -of the above facts this rop should be ’ grown more ban ever before this year. As an emergency war food crop it stands among the first. I find that at'Heast 50 % of the potato crop of last year lias- rotted, which is ■ a consider able los9. Tnis loss should not occur because it can be prevented by the proper selection of* seed andapethods of storiug. In sav ing your slips always save them from theVme cutting potatoes, and you will prevent quite a little bit of *the loss. The sweet potato store houses will al i03t entirely wipe out the loss Jrom rot. Every farmer that grows 200- bu, or more of potatoes should have a store house* or.in communities the coo{>erafcive store house should be erected. These store houses are not very costly, and tljey will pay for themselves in t&vo years in the gaving of potatoes. If you are interested in a store house, plan for it now, your county demon stration agent will be glad to assist you in getting plans and bill of materials. Got in touch with him at once. *• The following plan for the sweet potato production this year has been suggested, which is;gpod I think. See if .you eaiinbt carry it out. 1.
