The farm err can win this war.
Only by famine does the Kaiser ho^e
to conquer—famine by force of the sub
marine. If the submarine brings Eng
land and FVance to their knees, beg
ging bread in. the humiliation of de
feat, the Kaiser will then turn upon
the United States. *
‘England and France can be f&'ved
from famine by the, farmers of the
United States and Canada in spite of
the submarine, if they will. The sub-
niarine will sink food that England
and 'France ’ ary- Hoirelv*~ n^>dh 4»u
s UHwrarmtr-rrtTr* noT'lffif—ehougTTTo
starve our allies, if thr? farmer of. the
United States will raise maximum
crops, raise every pound and sav e ev-
ery pound of foods he possibly can.
It’s a fight, therefore, between the
farmer of the United States on ithe
one hand and the gaunt wolf Qf the
Kaiser, famine,' on the other hand.
If the American farmer can raise
enough to allow for the sul/marine
loll and enough more food to , place
“over there” to feed those who are
lighting, then victory is ours..
But it’s a narrow margin. The
whole world is on the verge of star
vation. K ev<^n a norpia'l chip Is pro
duced in tills country it is not going
to afford enough to feed everybody
dependent upon this country, a full
ration. At best there is going to be
lack. The American farmer must
awaJren to a serious realization that
this Is no small task, in. fact, It Is
only a fighting chance.
If the Afm-riean farmer will only
realize this, then he mtist recognize
that every blow he makes must count
for thg' utmost. Maximum yields
must be striven for as -never before.
This is no phne to leave anything
unemphasi/ed that will cqunt for
greater -yields. Efficiency must oper
ate with every- act on the farpr from
+rrenktn#-4he soil 'deeply To garnering
tho crops with a saving h.and;
Thorough preparation of the seed
bed may be accomplished with less
labor than is customary, by the use
of labor saving farm machinery.
Liberal and'rational applications of
plant food should be made this year.
Eamvers who never used commer
cial fertilizers before should certain
ly do 90s now for, the nation’s sake.
Tiie same modern, labor saving
farm machinery that’ will enable a
farm hand to plov^^two rows while
plowing one heretofore—and plow
them better—must be made use of.

Cold Frame.—The cold frame
should always accompany the hotbed,
the plants v first be tag started In'tho
hotbed and then transplanted to the
cold frame, and from there to the open
ground whenever the weather condi
tions will permit. The cold frame
differs from the hotbed In only one re-
epect, it does .not have the manure a>
the bottom of the bed to produce heat,
otherwise the frame is constructed in
exactly the same way as the hotbod..
Cold frames are sometimes covered
with heavy canvas instead of glass.
This iB much cheaper th: kr* glass
end the frames are more :y Tviirjp
died w^ien covered by can'.as than
when covered with glass, -’j he plants,
however, will not grow off as rapidly
but this, as a rule is an advantage
In favor of the canvas-cbvered frames.
The chief trouble - with the amateur
gardener is that he forces his plant*
too rapidly.
