farmers are facing *. most se
rious situation this winter, says'the
dairy division of Cleiuson College.
With grain feeds SvCllirig around $50
a ton and good hay bringing $30. the
question of what ami Mbw- to feed the
dairy cow should demand serious con
sideration.
There will be about 150,000 more tq-
habitaijts than usual in South Caro
lina this winter, due to tlm location of
the army trailing canjps*/ These peo
ple will" want dairy products. vPrices
are already advancing due to this de
mand. Farmers may feed cowv
knowing that they will have a mar
ket for their milk and cream at.a
good price. But it will be necessary
for the successful / dairyman to know
the principles, of .feeding for econom
ical production ^
Milk is composed of water and sol
ids derived hirectly from the feed*-
eaten by the cow. Therefore, it is the
duty of the feeder to know what feeds
produce the most milk and to see (hat
the cow obtains these feeds jn tl\e
right proportions.- • ~ *-
T~ Proper Ration fob Dairy COW.*
The "dairy cow’s ration should meet ■
the following requirements; -It mpst-
he abundant, nutritious^ palatable,
snerulent/.and cheap- A1E the abqve*
requirements may he met by/f^eds
produced entirely - in this state., A
great mai\y good/rxiws are Forcdd to
t ,go dry e^rlv in the lactation period'
because, 'the/-feed Bi^Abt'abundant.- Th?
epw should receive sufficient feed to
maintain herTbodv without Moss _ oL

her maximum-of milk.'- A' liberal ocb-
noinlbal ration for" the best type of
bow Is" all the roughage she-,wlir eat
and one pound of grain* feed for each
three pounds of milk she produces.
Feeds ll^kftraw. shucks and hulls
are not very nutritious. The^e are" 1 -
composed largMy of ^ber which the
cow cannot digest. Legume hav. suclr
as alfttfre. elovjer; and peavipe, is
such as silage and roots are essential
to the ^heavy-milking cows since about
seVen-eighths of milk is water.
Probably the most important factor
in the choice of a feed i3 that it must
he cheap, not necessarily in the sense
of being made up of low-grade or low-
cost feeds, but* from the pt&ndpoint of
furnishing the largest possible amotyit
(k. digestible nutrients at the least
eo?lv Home-grown feedsi ordinat :ly

the successful dairymen are -*tbose
who raise mobb of the feeds for their 1
"herds. No daiVyn^an in South Caro
lina has yet |nade asuccess when he
buj 1 ^ his. roughage. ■ A vwide variety
of feeds may he grown, permitting the
dairyman to produce a weU-balanced
ration at a low cost. The following
"unit” of feed is suggested for each
cow: *.
Forage* - ,
1 ton legume hay (peavine, vetch, or
clover). • '
4 l;ons roots or silage.
1 ton sqrghum (for summer feed),
