HEROIC AMBULANCE
Notable Gift to United States National Museii
\~ ■ - r r.
T HE United States'NatjArtal museum at Washington has recently received
nnd put on exhlbUfon a notable coliectioh of swords, tmlfonus and
mIf*6ellnneotis rHIrs/Yif Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan. These mernentos
• were a gift to tfve museum from George
B. McClellan of Princeton university.
Tiie swords, of .which there are
nine, are perhaps the most interesting
feature, of the ..collection. The most
striking of these Is n gold-mounted
sword set with pearls presented to-
McClellan by a number of citizens of
Boston In 18C3, in recognition .oT his
services during -the Civil war. The
scahbard is inscribed, “To Major
General George B. McClellan, from
.many cl'tlzetni. of Boston, Feb, 5, 18(k3.
1 Pro rrge saepe. pro pntrla semper.” Two swords in the collection were car
ried by McClellan In the Civil war, n\dress sword and a service sword. -~
The other swords in the collection commemorate his Mexican war ^service,
one dres? sword having been presented to hint.“by a number of gentJCtm*n. tis,
a testimonial of tlieir high admiration, for'tils.gallantry during the war with
Mexico. First, at the siege of Vera Cruz; second, the battle of Cerro Gordo;
third, battle of Contreras; fourth, battle of Churubusco; fifth* Chapultepeq;
sixth, capture of the City of Mexico.”
Another of the swords carried in the Mexican war is a service saber
with a small piece of the hilt broken away. 'The., donor of the collection
writes: “A piece of the.-hilt of this sword was" 1 carried away by a bullet
which slightly vrounded General McClellan^^C?? 1 hand.” —
Among the other relics of this gn ut!^^^^iean general are several uni
forms^ spiers, field glasses, revolvers,’ powder' flasks, and a number of more
personal relics. •
