1. We find that the County jail and
premises are at present in an extremely
good and sanitary condition. We rec
ommend, however, tha^ the County
Board of Commissioners have all of

bui there i£ still some evidence of
drunkenness in our county. We under
stand that the most of this drunkenness
is produced by the consumption of cer
tain extracts which contain a large per
cent, of alcohol, add .which if drunk to
excess will produce intoxication. We
recommend that the.8heriff, Constables
and other police officers in Barnwell
County take this matter in "charge in
order to prevent the safe of these ex
tracts. k - • .
There have been several reports to
the Grand Jury that certain Magistra
tes in Barnwell county have not com
plied with the.law in turning over to
the County Treasurer fines and money
collected by them. The Grand Jury
hdi fully considered this matter and do
hereby recommend lo the Court that
hereafter-alFMagifarates be required to
report to the Grand Jury op the first
Tuesday of each Court of General Ses
sions and bring with them their docket,
showing the case*disposed of. Hr* num
ber of -Committments issued, the fines
collected and-receipts from the County
Treasurer showing that the fines have

Walter Fowke, Sam Gantt and Dick
Gantt took in the commencement of
the Springfield High School on the 2{st
and report lots of pretty girls, a picnic
and a good time in general. Mr Fowke
took them over in his new Dort ear.
Dr and Mrs W. S. Hay of Bessimer
City. N. C., are spending * few days
with the family of Mr J_. M. Gantt. It
has been some time since they were
here and their many frieuds are mighty
glad to have them with us cnee again.

ranked among the high schools of the
state as Class C, and the enrollment
was 175 pupils. The school now ranks
n Class A, with fourteen units to its
credit, and the enrollment was '25*'. For
the second time the-graduates of the

fairs of the schixil are now established
upon so firm a basis that it is more

on a salary does the practice at this
chaingang. He visits the gang only on
tall. The records of the^ifoiivicts kept
by the foreman do not ehow the race
and ages and the Hates of discharge of
convicts on his gang. The law requir
ing tlu^ separation of* the races is
obeyed. However, one-twelfth instead
of one-tenth is deducted from the sen
tence of convicts for good behavior.

Blackville, June 4.—Several storm
clouds passed over this section yesterday
afternoon from 2 o’clock until night
with hail five different times. Some
sections reported it as large as hen eggs
The lighting was very^ kj&en throughout
the afternoon. It struck in a den of
mules, belonging to JL JL Pickling, and -
knocked tr.em all down and stunned
sevearl very badly, killing a fine one
