Tho Annual meeting ol the Orange burg Agricultural and Mechanical As sociation won held this merniog at tho Fair Building. Tno^coting vyas organized by'calling Dr. T. A. Eiiiott to tho chair, and Mr. J.' W! Patrick wob requested to act ob Secretary. A majority of the stook being represented the chair announced a quorum pr?sent, and tho mooting ready for business. Dr. W. F. Barton, President of the^ Association being absent, Mr. 3. Dibble from tho Board of Directors submitted the Annual report of the Board, via : To the Stockholders oj the Orangeburo Agricultural and Mechanical Association; The Board of Directors rospcctfully Bub'thnylho following report: tfho Board^ congratalntes the Stock holders upon the improved condition of the Association. A comparison of the .?lfotcihJnfc of ?he Treasurer, this year with last year's statement, shows th'nt the finances are in better condition than at the last meeting. Tho Annual Fair [of 1874,'. noi.Wit&3t.?i?ding to w& lieid during tho pendency of tho general election realized a profit of $239 84. The grounds of the Association aro in process of improvement, tree* havVbeon planted, some fencing has been built, aud arrangements hovo been entere d into for the cultivation of such parts of the ground as can be routed'for that purpose, and the various special re Eourccs for income have becu utilized, 1 so as to make the property pay as much as possible. In addition to the profits of the last Annual Fair, we had on hand, at its close, premiums enough for a Floral Fair lhiir^#prtug, but they wunl'aufur tanutely destroyed in the store lately occupied by the Treasurer, in the conflagration of January 5th 1875. The Board of Director/, consider that ample opportunity has been furnished to nil who desired to take stock in the Association to do so; and they recommend, that the stockholders, by resolution, express their opinion on this matter, and if the wish of the stook holders is in accordance with the views of tho Directors, the Board which will bo this day elected, cuu then take the proper constitutional stops to fix the stock at the numtie&of shares thought proper by the Stockholders. All of Wbjcly. is respe?&ulr/s'ubniitted. J Gt Wannamaker, S Dibble, L It Beokwitii, M J Keller, Board of Directors. The Treasurer's report was then sub mitted and on motion both wire received -as information. The following resolution was unan imously adopted: Iicsolvvd, That ample opportuutity has been afforded to ull who may desire stock of tho Association, (bow staudiug at a niaxiuin of 300 shares, of which 208 havo been taken) and it is tho opin ion of the stockholders that tho Board ehould take steps to have a meeting of the stockholders to fix tho stock at 225 chares. The olection of Directors being next in order, Col. P S Felder moved that the same Board be continue 1 for the on suing year. Mr J G Wannamaker having declined ri?-elcction, Mr. H Riggs was nominated to fill the vacancy, and Col Folder's motion was thcu unanimously carried. The following gentlemen oompoeo the Board, viz: Messrs W F Barton, F H \V Brigg - mann, M J Koller, S Dibble, L R Beckwith, O B Riloy and II itigge. The following resolution was adopted Resolved. That wo dcom it the duty of overy stockholder to exhibit aomo thing at our Fairs, and Bhould actively use their influence with neighbors and friends to contribute both by exhibiting articles, und their personal attendance at the Fair. Tho following resolutions wcro alno adopted: Iiesolvctt, That tho Secretary havo tho proceedings of this meeting p'lb liidled in the County papers that will do it free of charge. No other business, on motion the meeting ndiourncd, nud by invitntion partook of a lunch provided by Dr. W F Barton. ? J W PATRICK, Secretary. The Board of Directors met after the adjournment of tho Association, and re elected Dr. W F Barton President. KIRK ROBINSON, Secretary and Treasurer. Law-Making in Hawaii. In Hawaii the Legislature, composed of ? a llouso of Nobles aud a House of Representative:!, makes the laws, but if their Acts are not approve 1 by the King, they havo no effect. The nobles nro made by the King, and tho roprrscu tatives are elected by the people. In order to he a voter, one must have a oertain income and bo of good standing in tho community; aud where women possess these requirements, they have the privilege of votiug. Out of the 'eleven representatives, five are Women. Any man who drinks or swears cannot sit on a jury. There arc no beggr.rs. ? every man aud woman who is able being compelled to work, aud tho Govern mcut gives employment to those who have none. Tho two predominating religions arc the Catholic and Congrcga tional. It is customary for young wo men to "pop the question" to young men. Crimes iuvolving social virtue and purity are punished by heavy dues, and Sabbath breaking and swearing by small fines. If a woman's husband absents himself fro n her fourycirs she can marry again, aud the code of laws has this provision : uIf two married per sons do not live happily together, but quarrel, and become famous for the same, tiiey shall be confined in irons each night separately in the s ante cell' until they cease quarreling." A Burst of Eloqurmco. Western eloquence continues still t> improve. A Wisconsin reporter sends us the following sketch. A lawyer in Milwaukee was defending a haudso ue young woman accu.-cd of stealing fro u a large unoccupied buildii. g in the night time, and thus he spoke in conclusion : j '?Gentlemen of the jury, I am done. I When I gaze with enraptured eyes on the matchless beauty of this peorlcsi virgin, on whoso resplendent charms suspicion never dared to breathe; when I behold her radiant in the glorious bloom of lustrous lovliness which niigclic sweetness might, envy but could uot eclipse; before which the star on the brow of the night grows pale, ami the diamonds of Brazil uro dim;and then reflect upon ihe ut ter madness rlit] folly of supposing that so much beauty would expose itself to the terrors of an empty building in the cold, damp deal of the night, when innocence like hers is hiding itself among the snowy pillows of repose; gentlemen of the jury, my feelings are too overpowering for ex prossiou, and I throw her into your arms for protection against this foul charge, which the outrageous malice of a disappointed scoundrel has invented to blast the fair name of this lovely maiden, whose smiles shall be the re ward of the verdict which I know you will give." She was acquitted instantaneously . Sheepskin Mats. To Make sheepskin mats wash, while fresh in strong soapsuds, first picking irom tho wool all the dirt (h it will cotno out. A little kerosene, a tablespoonful to tho gallon of water, will aid in re moving the iinpurii.it s. Continue to wash tho ski u iu fresh suds till it is white and clean. Then dissolvo a half a pound each of salt an 1 alum in throe piuts of boiling water, put it into water cover the skin, which should be soaked into tho solution twelve hours, and then be hung on a lino to drain.
