Carolina several years ago, dining hor last
illness, and were novor in p-int boforo, so
far as we nro informed. Their sainted
author never put pen to paper after writing
them, and lingering but n ilay or two, pass
cd into the skies:
Sister, death is o'er mo stealing.
Earth is fading from my sigbt;
Angels o'er my bed nro bonding.
Clad in robes of shining light.
Sister 1 am parting from thee,
Leaving nil life's toil and pain;
Now 1 leave thee, sister dearest,
But thou'lt yet be mine again.
Yes, in yonder world of glory,
Where the henrt no grief can feel,
Where no sin shall mar our spirits,
Sifter, we Bhnll love there still.
Bear a message to my brother?
Tell him life is almost o'er!
Far beyond death's foaming ocean,
Lo, l-sec the eternal shore.
Give to him my dying message;

presents some rather startling statistics
concerning the different v.ars in which the
United States have .been engaged. In the
war of the revolution (1775 to 1783) 273,
021 soldiers were engaged; in the war of
1812 to 1815, 627,004; in tho Mexican war,
73,200?making a total of 878,035?while in
the war of 18G0 no less than 2,757,508 were
engaged. During the rebellion, 270,689
officers nnd men were killed or wounded,
vhile RC,T40 were missing in action. Since
tho commencement of the war the govern
ment hns paid, up to June, 1874, in pen
sions, over $251,000,000. Duducting $5,000,
CC0 lor former pensioners, there is left
?24G,COO,C0O growing out of the rebellion.
Somo idea of tho number of pensions and
the amounts paid during these twelve years
may be gathered from the following table:

The rebellion entailed a debt of $2,500,
000,000 upon the government, to be paid by
the people, and, aside from tho principal of
the public debt and pensions, there was
pnid during the fiscal year 1873 the sum of
$127,002,980.05, on account ofjoxponscs
growing out of the bite war. The country
was- saved at a terrible sacrifice, yet wc de
stroyed slavery, presarved the union, an d
firmly established j the constitntipn on th o
foundation of justice, freedom, peace und
independence.
