Some years ago an old gentleman lived near Branchvillo who had two sons, the largest of whom went to Charleston with a fleet of timber. By cutting wood nnd birch poles on tho way, ho was ablo by tho pro ?cccd.'i of their Balo to purchaso a silver watch, the first ono over owned in tho family. Of course it mado our horo somewhat proud io hnvo a shining time piece, and he would never let an occasion go by without pulling it from his pookct, nnd shutting it up with a loud click. It is a known faot that he consulted Ids watch evory fifteen minutos in tho day to soo what titno it was. Now his father was n stingy old gentleman, and although his son had worked for tho money with which his watch was purchased, he, the patornal guardian, did not think it right that his overly proud boy should trillo away so elegant nn ornament, and useful a pri/.c as tho glittering beauty in question. So be frequently warned his son how to use it. But tho fact of it was, tho old gentleman knew, no more about a watch and its mys terious machauism than his son, as tho Bcqual will show. One Sun.lay afternoon?it was a Sunday that the family had company?the owner of the time peice was called up and asked for the hour of tho day. lie pulled out his turnip to find to his confusion that it bad ceased to run. This fact was announced to the head of tho family, who became terribly incensed, and made use of such expression 8 as those : "I teld you, you wouldn't keep it a week, you fool you. If you had kept it in your pocket, instead of having it out and opened all tli3 time, it would have been in good order now. Hand it here to me, sir, and let me see what's tlie matter with it." Tho son done as he was hidden, and gave the watch to his father. The old man opened it, put on his spectacles and began to examine for tho cause of trouble, with all the inportaneo of a: would-be watch maker. After working a while, he said to his boy , "Hand mo your pocket knife, you've got a hair in it, you God blasted infernal fool. I knew you had let trash get into it , or brok'ii it in i-ome way. You ain't fit to have any thing that you ain't. Watches were never mado for "idle boys who do not know how to handle them. While the father was talking ho was busily turning the watch about n order to get at the impediment to it run ning. Finnally a hold was obtained on it and with the expression, "Now I've got it" jerked the hair-spring entirely out of the w atch. The mistake was at once discover ed, the old man put the blame on his wifo for not giving him a clean hankerchief to wipe Ids "specs" with, while the boy swore his "daddy" ha 1 ruined him. "Tho old coholctcd cuss" he says to this day, ''had no more brains th.n his watch had hairs in it." He always left homo after th it Sun lay when his father had company.
