dresses himself in female attire and
parts his hair in the middle. During
the day he associates with the females
and docs sewing and embroidery of the
finest kibd. He has been reserved for
the Centennial.
Tbo Laurcnsvillc Herald pathetically
appeals to its subscribers as follows : "A
limited number of shingles will be taken
in payment of dues to this office. We
will a'so take, in the same way, a few
dozen thcaf oats, chickens and a few
dozen of hen fruit. Here's a chance to
pay iu barter. WcTJ not need any
money until you 'sell your cottou' that's
been on hand so loug.
"Within the last few years great
improvements have been made'in grape
culture nud wine making in Italy.
Italian wine can now be sent abroad,
across land and sea not only without
any risk of spoiling, but actually gain
ing iu strength und flavor alter every
voyage. The principal markets for
Italian wines aro Central and South
America, Egypt, Turkey and Russia.
The importation iuto the United States,
though on the increase, is hindered by
the inability of the Italians to under
btand the requirements of the trade.
A correspondent of the London
Times, writing from Spuiu upon the
subject of the political condition, says
that the pcaplc do not care what form
of govcrnmcut is adopted nor who may
be appointed to rule over them so long
as they aro undisturbed in their indus
trial pursuits. Although Madrid is in
tho turmoil of political excitcmeut, the*
writer doubts whether the movement
there has produced any echo in the rural
districts or tho great centres of com
rncrco and industry, excepting among
tho class to whom a ministerial change
means "bread lost or bread gained."

tain Stalo Scholarships in the University of
South Cnrolina a Free public competitive
examination will bo hcid at this ofBcu on
Monday .Tiily Gth 1871." Tho act provides
that but one student shall be admitted from
each County for the first year. Of all the
applicants for admission the three exhibi
ting tho greatest proficiency in all the
branches of study required for the admiss
ion of students into the University, will be
recommended to tbo State Board of
examiners, r.nd a final Examination will be
held by tho State Board of Examiners at
Columbia on Thursday Octobci 1st. 1871,
when the candidate is found most proficient
will be admitted to a Scholarship in tho
University.
Tho successful candidate when admittod
will bo entitled t" recicve Two Hundred
Dollars annually, aud tuition free.
