Last Saturday morning early a crowd of fine looking colored men, dressed in bit e jackets, black pants and wearing caps of the same color, with a white .shield in front, on which was painted the word "Comet," assembled at their Kngiue Hall where they organized, under their President, Mr. Lewis Moss a ml prepared for a celebration of the glorious Fou'th. 'J he company marched up Kussel street to the railroad, thence by the Dcp'ot and up the new Street to Market out of which they filed into the pine grove buck of Capt. Howe's residence. Here a splendid dinner awaited them which was partaken of amid wit, humor sentiment and Fourth of July spoeches. A p'easant incident occurred during tho dinner Mr. M Albrctcll, one of the Board of Fire-Musters, appeared upon the scene and presented the company with a btautiful bouquet, in language appropriate to the occasion. In the afternoon Messrs Andrews Browning, Mey >rs ?'? ahlers an I Moun t, came from the Militia celebration under an escort of the Fire Company, and joined the Comet, when a new celcbra tion commenced, and amid goo 1 wishes for the Company s succc.-s, the pleasant affair ended. A well known domestic nnnimal, of the gcus Sus, of gluttinous and filthy habits, kept for the fat and meat, called, respectively, lard and pork, which it furnishes. In the great West, and other places than this, where Imgj arc raised for profit, they are kept iu pens, and fenced fields, cleanly fed, and their "filthy habits" not ever under the eyes of desaut p ;o pie. In the town of Orangoburg, how ever, they are allowed full play, and the gallant porker nan kiss nil s.v-at heart in the street as well as behind tho kitchen door. Low fays "a moan, filthy or gluttinous fellow, is a hog." We say "it is six of ono and half dozen of 'tother," with this difference, the hog of tho genus man would not be allowed, by our Town Council, to commit the same nuisance on our streets as are nllowo 1 the hog of the genus Sus; "and it worries our mind how as decent n town council as we have can allow it evon from the hog of the genus Sus. How long, 0 1 bow long, Mr. Mayor, is this nuisance to be borne in our midst if Selfrospect and decency de mands its abatement. Croat things were expected of you, gentlemen, and we hope that this cry, which comes from the whole decent portion of ourcommu nity will be immediately heeded. And that the partiality so 1 ong shown to the hog of tho genus Sus, over tho bog of the genus man, is stopped , and hereafter no kind of hogs will be allow?] at large iu tho streets of our pretty and nourishing town. ? ?r??-?.??'?',;' ' Town Clock-?Oraugeburg needs a Town Clock us Bonrcely any two persons igree upon the ti'ac, und the various meetings of our societies uro seldom held at the appointed hour, because there is no standard recognized by the community It is a notorious fact that the services in our various churches do not often commence at the hour stated. Now time (in one sense at least) is mou cy, and if we had a clock which the community would adopt, as the correct standard, much time, now uselessly speut iu waiting till (.lie latest man's watch shall havo iudicatod tho proper hour, would be saved. The advantages are so nbivious, how ever, that wc will next ask, "is it praeti cable V* Wc think so. The Steeple ol* the Baptist church was evidently built with reference to placing a clock there and wc aro informed by several Baptist, that it would he entirely agreeable to the. members to use it for this pur pose. Is the cost too great? We think not. Au experienced watch maker who has circulars of town clock makers, tells us that a clock with 4 dials (3J feet in diamitcr) giving only the time, can be purchased for $250; a cloek strik ing the hours would cost S-125. There would be a few additional expenses in curred, but (hey would Lc comparative ly small. But who will furnish the money? Where the whole community is to be bcnclitod, wc arc unwilling to ask a few individuals to bear the expeu scs, and think the Town should foot the bill. We respectfully suggest to our Council to give this nutter tho ir immediate attention. Let every one who is interested speak to tlu members of the Council on the subject.?'San.
