About four hundred yards of very light

A small trigger is palled, and the rockot
leaps through the air, and over the dia
tressed ship; bearing the line with it.
Happily, it falls aoross the dock, and ia
hauled in bjsghe sailors on board. When
the shore end is reached, a blook, held
ing a stouter rope and a board contain

The men on the beach wait patiently
until n rocket or light is displayed in
answer, and the life care is then dia
patched on its journey. It is susponded

shore. In ten or fifteen minutes it is
alongside the tcssgI, and is filled with
wrecked people. Again a signal is dis
played, and the life car makes its return
journey?sometimes riding over the
waters; sometimes high and dry, and
sometimes submerged by the heavy sea.
It is so constructed that it contains
enough, air. to give four persons breath
for .at* least fifteen minutes, but other
wise it is not ventilated. More it comes

'Why do tho women wear these
things V the venerable chief, Chiosurdi
was asked;
Evidently surprised at such a stupid
question, he: replied:
'For beauty! Thoy are the only

have beards, women have none. What |
kind of a person would she be without

at all, with a mouth like a man but no
heard?'
One woman having a large tin pchle
with a bottom liko a dish, refused tu
sell It, because, sho said, hor husband
would heat her if she went homo with
out it. These rings are made ef bam
boo, of iron, or of tin. Their scanty
clothing-?the prepared bark of trees,
the skin of animals (chiefly goats), and
a thick streng cttton oloth, aro all of
native manufacture. They seem to bo
an industrious race.
The following is recommended as a
reolpt for making bologna sausage I?
Take eel skin and stuff it wi'.h ground
cat; season it, with Scotch, snuff and per
teimmon eil; lay* it on, a hog pen to dry,
?and then hang it up by tho tail in a
grocery for three months for flies to
