The rocket apparatus haa been ar
raagotf", und is firmly planted in the
Mid. It ia a long t-ibo, mounted on a
tripod, and ia fired by i\ perouaaion cap.
About four hundred yards of very light
card are smoothly coiled at the bane,
and one oad is nttaohed to the rocket.
A small trigger is pulled, and tho rooket
leaps through the air, and over the dis
treaaed ship, bearing the Hoe with it.
Happily, it falls aoross tho deok, and is
hauled in bfithosailors on board. When
the shore end is reached, a block, held
ing a stouter.rope and a board contain
ing the following words, in English and
French, aro found' attached.

lowermast, Well up If the masts are
gone, then fasten it to the best place

that the rope in the block runs free, and
show signal to the shore.'
The men on the beach wait patiently
until n rocket or light is displayed in
answer, and the life caro is then din
patched on its journey. It is suspended
the ropes by rings, and is hauled
across the waters by the men on the
shore. In ten or fifteen minutes it is
alongside the vessel, and is filled with
wrecked people. Again a signal is diu
played, and the life oar makes its return
journey-?sometimes riding over the
waters} sometimes high and dry, and
sometimes submerged by the heavy sea.
It is so constructed that it contains
enough air to give four persons breath
ior at least fiftten minutes, but other
wiso it ia not ventilated. Here it comes
gliding' nearer tho shore. 'Steady!'
the commandant cries to his men, who
are pulling with all their might and
main. 'Steady 1' The ear touches the
sand, and is dragged out ef reach of tho
water. The trap-door is oponcd, and
three women?wet, cold, terrified, but
still alive?are safoly landed. Only
thirty-one minutes havo passed since
the first rooket was fired, and, thereafter,
liv?3 are saved at the rate ot over forty
an h?ur--until not a soul remains on the
wreck.

enr quarters with him. Many of the
men aro very intelligent looking with
high foreheads and well shaped heads.
They ahow singular tosto J in the aston
ishly varied styles in which their h^ir is
arranged. Their bead necklaces are
really pretty specimens of work. Many
have the upper and middlo, as wel 1 as
the lower part of the ear, bored, and
have from three to five rings iu each
ear. The hole in tho lobe of the ear is
large enough to admit ones finger, and
some wear a piooe of bamboo, about an
inch long in it. Brass and iron braoe
lets, elaborately figured are seeu; and
some of the men sport from two to eight
brass rings on each finger, and even tho
thumbs are not spared- They wear oop
per, brass and iron rings on their legs
arms many.have their front teeth notch
ed, and some file them till thoy resemble
the teeth of a saw. The upper lip ring
of tho women gives them a revolting ap
pearance; it ia universally worn in the
highlands. A puncture is made high
up in tho lip, and is gradually enlarged
until the pdele can be inserted. Some
are very large. One we measured caus

'Why do tho women wear these
things 7' the venerable chief, Chinsurdi
waa asked:
Evidently surprised at suoh a stupid
question, ho replied:
?For beautyl Thoy aro the only
beautiful things women have! Mon
have beards, women have none. What
kind of a person would she bo without
the pelele? Sko would not be a woman
at all, with a mouth like a man but no
heard?'
One woman having a large tin pclele
with a bottom like a dish, refused tu
sell it, because, oho said, her husband
would heat her if she went homo with
out it. Thoso rings are made of bam
boo, of iron, or of tin. Their scanty
olothiag?the prepared bark of tress,
tho akin of animals (chiefly goats), and
a thick strong cetton cloth, are all of]
native manufacture. They seem to bo
an iaduitrious race.
The following is recommended as a
recipt for making bologna sausage 1?
Take eel akin And stuff it wi'.h ground
eat; season it with Scotch snuff and per
simmon eil; lay it on.a hog pen to dry,
.and then hang it up by the tail in a
grocery for three months for flies to
give it the trade mark; and then it is
tlady for use.
