papers that Mr. A. 8. Hydriek of this
county received the degree- of M. D.
recently at tho South Carolina Univer
sity. Not that Orangcburg really needs
more doctors, but we might as well have
them as any,other part of theStato. Dr.
Hydriek has our best wishes for success
in his noble but arduous profession.

Co., line gone snd done it. The down
passonger train reaches here at half past
eight and the up train at a quarter lo
cloven. Both in the morning. This
may do very well for the passengers,
but is rather rough on the townsfolk*
who, after 10,45 A M. have nothing

pid, lasy, hot, miserable summer dty.

TBE NEW STREET?
Numerous inquires have been made
ot us as to tbe probsble precise location
of the proposed New Street. That is a
matter entirely h the hands of the
Town Council snd as to which we have
no information whatever. We do not
suppoee it to be the intention of any
one interested in the movement to in
jure or incommode any property owner
when tbe interests of the public can be
*tVerwi*e equally subserved. Whero
private and public interests clash or in
terfere, the form must, of course, give
way, but we arc glad to say that in tbe
present case we see no necessity for the
ffaieing of any euch issue.

fine style yesterday to celebrate the
"glorious Fourth." After parading
through the principal streets they

THE SCHOOL TAX?
Last week the annual district meeting
was held at the schrol house on the New*
Street to deleruiiue the amount of tax
to be raided for school purposes iu this
district the current year.
On motion of Mr. Meyers, Mr. Mo
Kiuhiy took the chair, aud Mr. Holivor
wus choseu Secretary.
On motion of Mr. Knowlton it was
decidod that two mills on tho dollar
should be the amount raised the ooming
ye??r.
On motion of Mr. Mej-ers, the Chair
uppoiuted the following cotnuiittee lo
receniuiend a more equal distribution of
sobool houses in the distriot. J Felder

Gloyer, H Clover, Ksqs.
On n otion of Mr M Glover it was
declared that the cmount rai<ed uudcr
tho present assessment should be used
exclusively to pay teachers' salaries?
but that any balance should go to pay
for school h< uses. Tho meeting then
adjourned.

there is none on sulc any where. Cigars
are manufactured by tho Government,
1 and are sold only at. storos where uoth
ing else is sold excopt postage stamp*.
They are at fixed prices, the lowest cost
ing four kreutzers and the highest eight,
or about four cents in our currency.
Tho latter are about equal iu quality to
Ameriean domestic cigars, that bring
throe dollars per hundred. The single
j cigar is sold there at the same rate as if
one thousand wcrr purchased.

The recent deoisiona of the Supreme
Court of the United States bare declared
the B0ME8TEAD ACTS of this State un
constitutional as to debts contracted prev
ious to J 808.
The last amendment to the Rankrupt law
gives to the debtor the same esemption of
real and personal property as was given ta
hin by the HOMERTS'.D LAW.
The only way that HOMESTEADS can be
secured is by taking the benefit of the Bank,
rupt Act.
