A Night iu an African Tree.
Night is a favorite time with almost
?II wild eoimul.1 for feeding or moving
?bout. Especially is this the case with
those African oreutures which during
the day, pass their time in forests and
oaves. Elephants, particularly, select
tho .light for feeding, and t hoy will then
quit their dense cover, and wander on
the pining wher* thoy would fear to
?how thei'iaelvos during daylight. On
more thau ono occasion tho writer and a
friend passed aeveral hours of tho night
concealed among the branches of a treo,
in order to have the opportunity of
watching the habits of some of those
animals-whose nature it was to lie hid
den during, the day.
On the firbt occasion that we ever
tried that experiment, wo had taken for
oar companion a gentleman, who was
neither gifted with pati n.-c. n >r with
that enthusiasm which is necessary to
render & night in*a tree a pleasant ohaui; .
We remained in this tree somo two hour*
our companion, by his frequent move
ments and tho noise be made, rendering
it unlikely that we.should seo any animal
whese hearing was acute. Tho bright
ooonlight, however, that renders every
thing by nigh1 almost as visible as by
day, tempted us. to venture on other
occasions to undertake night adventures.
And on more than one night wo wore
rewarded by witnessing events that do
not fall within tho experiences of every
person.'
One night, In particular, we recall as
n very interesting one. It wua niter un
afternoon ride near the bush down by
the Imvoti River, whero we hud seen
the fresh spoor of several elephants, that
we decided upon pasting a few hours in
a large tree that stood apart from the
m&iu bush, and - from tho branches of
which |a good view could be obtained of
the ground. For a cou>paui<>n we select
our- usual huntiag Caffre, who is alwu>*
ready for sport, and, arming him with
ono"of our cutis, wc started ut about tcv
o'clock at night, reached tho tree after
half an hour's walk, and soon were in
its branches.
A walk by night in a country where
there are such animals as lionn, Lopurds.
hyenas, snakes, elephants, buffaloes, and
other formidable creatures, requires
considerable caution; for it would be
erceseivciv awkward to run aga^pAjf bnc?J
of them 'animals, or to turn a corner ol
? ' bush, and suddenly find yourself fact
to face with ono of them. There ore

hyena in particular, as wo experieuoeti

Having taken our stations, wo waited
for a vic? cf seme auitnal, and our pa
tisnce was rewarded, for, to our horror,
we Boen discovered a pair of hyenas,
which .bud evidently followed us, and
bad resojvjfd to await our dearer.t. The
night seemed interminable ; our pns;
tirns. were crowded and uncomfortable,
and, when daylight dawned, we were
ready lo drop with futiguo.

highland terrapin holding fast to the
squirrel by ono of its hind legs. Tbc
squirrel used all its strength to escape
by actually dragging the terrapin sever
at yards through the weeds, and finally
reaching a small sapling, it climcd ug
thai in hope of releasing the terrapin
But the terrapin beld to tha squirrel's
foot with a e'eath grip, aud Mr. Gibbs
went to tho sapling and shook them out
The tcrraping still kept his huld and
was dragged by the squirrel to a gopher
hole near by and was carried into it
. This was the las', seen of the terrapin
and his victim.
