seen. Mr. Phters was a man ol fine
tbiii-tics, and besides being shrewd aim
Successful in business, he was possessed
of superior scholarly attainments. His
home was among tho most elegant and
refined in tho city, adorned in the most
chaste and beautiful manner, and grace
fully presided over by hid wife an esti
mable accomplished lady. Whi'c in the
full tido of prosperity, with wealth pour
ing in upon mm,'Peters fell, lie could
not resist tho temptation offered by the
demon concealed beneath the rosy hue
of the wine cup, and his imagination was
heightened and his brain exhilarated by
the sparkling Champagne of his own
bitteft. The high reputation of his firm
began to feel the cffci ts of his dowuwnrd

of interest. Tho scholastic population
for 1871 is set down at 84,204 white
children, aud 125.172 colored; n total
of 200.'.57?. The total number of teach
ers employed in 1872 was 2185, of
which 1GS2 were white and IDS colored.
The total number of schools in 1S72
were 1010, an increase of 28(? over tho
previous year. The report puts do to
the number of .school houses in the en
tire State at 1 70. Mr. Jillson com
' plains of the inefficiency of thu Scho d
System.
