with the decision of the clerk can appeal
to the Com' of Common Picas where
the question will be submitted to a jury

The Legislaturo will reassemble on
t-bo seventh proximo, and the canvass
for the judicial honors of the Hightlr
Circuit will bo renewed with inereusud
.vigor. This is u mutter of considerable
interest to the people >f the Stufco, be
cause it is goucrally beliovcd, that if a
.Judge was elected, who while intensely
republican, would not from his antcccd
ents, be altogether distastef-il to the
people of that scctiou a better feeling
would prevail, and the groat principles
of the Republican party ox rt their
natural influence. It is LsSOtltrul that
the judiciary should ndmiuist r justice,
under the light of the Republican
principle, and we tlicrelore think that
neither Gori. McGowan, a Democrat of
the old school,uor Mr ?Iresmott, a Demo
crat of the new school, h::vc much reason
to hope for success, howovor cxeulleut
their individual 'jbaractnr, or eminent
their professional uhility. The contest
seems to be narrowed down bstwooa
Mr. Northrop of Charleston, Gen. Whip
por of BeauIort, ami Mr. Murray of
Anderson. Mr. Northrop, was a member
of the Rar in this Statu before the war
and h.is been a distinguished member of
the Republican party lor sonic years, iu
Charleston County. Of General Whin
per, wc need not speak, and of Mr.
.Murray we know very little, except that
be was defeated for the judgosh ip of the
seventh Circuit by Judge Melton and
was iu the last election the candidate
for Comptroller General on the opposi
tion ticket. The Circuit is composed ol
a largo wjiite Democratic majority and
if a Republican must be elected, they
would certainly prefer, one who would
at last be entirely free from any local or
personal influences. They would care
very little bow earnestly he might sup
port the State administration, not that
be came to them with a good profess
ional record. Taking into further cott
aidcration, the decisive test vote post
joining tlm election, which was strongly
opposed by 'Mr. Murrays friends we
think that his chances arc by no moans
ua good ns when defeated by Melton.
