Natur ully we have our preference, aud intend to support that man upon whom our preference falls. Now we arc certain that every body in South Carolina has heard of;*Titu. Hurley, his name has become notorious and has bicn heard of iu connection with ccrtuiu very question able nctg, but we will say no more on this head, only that wo are certain the people of South Carolina would prefer almost ahybhe clso rather than Tjm 11 urloy. Our Schools. This is a subject that needs a good deal 'of attention. It is a very impor tant one-, and one that deserves the care ful consideration of every man who possesses the least grain nf common sense. It effects the moral and social training of his children and decides their ultimate future. In t ..is county the schools ore in a bad condition, they need revising, and a thorough recon struction. In com potency hoe been, n failing in most of the teachers employed, and the results of that iucorapctcucy are plainly visible in the little progress the children of this couuty have made. We do not say who aro to blame, but leave the public to judge. Evidently there has been a screw loose somewhere, and we don't want that screw looso any longer.. Is it not possible for us to em plejjgopd> eapabla teachers, persons who undorstnnd tho science of impaiting to others that which they know? We think it it possible, and if they cannot be found' in this county, they can cer tainly bo' found somewhere olse. We must have good eompctput instructors lor our children, no matter wheio they are from. We want onr children educated, not superficially, but thorough ly. We wnnt them woll drilled iu eery study they pursue, so that the little tbey learn ut tho free school will bo ut least learned well. Our schoJ systom is miserable. It has more defects in it ihm can well be enumerated, and we hope for a reform. The School Com missioner elect has considerable work before him, but we believe he will go at it like a man. Wo think be has tho requisite pluck and energy to tako hold of all thou things that are unnecessary and damaging to our schools, and clean them completely out, and we will assist him so far as wo are ablo. It is a matter that cnV-'ts the interes's of the cntiro county, and all good citizens should lend their assistance to tho puri fication *of our school system, and conse quently to the prosperity and enlighten ment ot the county. Tho Tax Lety The tax levy for tho fiscal year com inencing November 1, 1871, is wo tire officially informell fifteen mills on the dollar. The taxable property in the State is approximated at about $150,000,? 000, which at the rate of (if. ecu milts on tho dollar will make a total of* $2,250,? 000. Thu tax is to be levied in the following manner: G Mills for general purposes ?500,000. 2 Mills for school purposes, 8300,000. 4 Mills for interest on debt, $000,000. 12 Mills Suite tax, SI,800,000. ?> *t:n. Pnnntv tax, 84,00,000. 15 Mills State and County tax, 82, 250,000. Now we arc satisfied our citiz ns will not grumble at this tax, it is, consider ing every thing, lighter than we ex pected, and it will bo noticed that uothiug has been said in relation to the Itlue Ridge I loud scrip. It seems as if the authoiitics at Columbia have con cluded to icavo it out. We are glad of it, for we have always oonsid< red it in the light of a swindle, and have ever fought against it. The tax levied for school purposes vvc hope when collected will be used car. fully sothat the educa tiott of the children of the State can be carried on. Wo arc certain that the tax-paying citizens will pay up promptly and avoid all trouble end expense. fhe State as every body know is deeply in debt, and this tax wheu collected will go n littlo way at any rate toward pay ing off a part of the indebtedness, and with everything seemingly fair and prosperous before us tho chances are that South Carolina may in time become free from the iueubu* uf debt that is now weighing sn heavily upon he?. The Ditty of tho Next Administra tion. *? f- ? -> SirbjcctJ j? r As this subject^ j> a moot important oue, and one that should demand the attention of all thinking men, we prop^so to discuss it impartially, an i to deal with things as tlu-y are. In the first place the next administration have many peculiar and urgent duties to pcrfor , ih'j have numerous reforms to make and various abuses to abolish. Tor people of the State, those whose interests and prosperity aro involved in Cm con duct of the next ad minist rat ion demand that certain pledges mndo before tho elcttiou be strictly kept. They demand that the taxes collected be used in a lawful utid legitimate manner, that the expenses of the State Government bo r*>r\nmt>A nml tirtnaet mnA ?-.^..V.l ? -? .-, . .. _ - ?-?r be appointed to office. Now it is the duty of the noxt administration to sjc that these things are done, to inculcate that spirit of reform which the people ciy fur, and to carry out consistently all good and lawful measures* It is our belief that the next administration will perform theso ncccspnry and'important? j acts, and we hupe that we believe right. Yet the promises of men who arc candi dates for office hrfor: election are very often broken after they are elected, but we do not think thus, of tho next ad ministration. Tlu-y as yet have not been tried, and we cannot oertniuly judge thorn botoro they have assumed the reins of government, so far as their past records arc concerned wo will not refer at all tu them, we will give them all the ercdit possible for performing the important duties devolving upon thorn, und for perfecting a Republican Govern ment, based upon honesty and justice, in Soutn Carolina. Out: people aro too wise, too farsccitig to do a thing so foolish as that wc luve spoken of, and again we do not think the men who will compose tho next administration aro governed solely by ambition. We behove they hold tho clovutioii und prosperity of South Curolina paramount to every thing else, 'and our opinion is that they will work so as to bring to the people prosperity and happiness, and giro tho lie to the charges and accusations that have becu brought against them. A move iu this direction has alt eady been made by Mr. Cardczo tho Treasurer elect, he has enjoined Parker from using any of tho money that will be collected1 for taxes during tho present year, this speaks well for tho next administration, and points plainly to the fact that they aro alive to tho demands the people mako for reform. "We hope that other things will be done, that an entirely purer and more houest system of govern - mcnt will be inaugurated, and that South Carolina will rise Phounix-liko from her ashes, under the rulo of the next ad ministration, and tako her place amo tig the proudest States in the Union. The Senatorial fight in Columbia is still going on sharply. Patterson and Scott have each opened rooms, aud are using money freely. Elliott and Wright having no money to use arc fighting up on their relative merits, and all aro sanguiuu of success. Louis ? Johnson dclcutcd condidatc lor Congress at Largo on the ?Holters" ticket, has been brought toward also as a candidate for Senatorial honors, but fchis chauccs arc poor, knowing ones report that the fight will dwindle dowu to Scotland Patter son, though Elliott affirms he will fight it out squarely on the question of color, and wout give up until ho finds himself defeated. The Board of State Canvassers at Columbia have decided by a vote of three to one in favor of Powcn's entire ticket. Wc can't say that we expected this, occame we did not; for wc kuow enough about how elections are con ducted iu Charleston County to make us believe that fraud had been committed, but ns the thing is done wo must acqui esce, though it is reported that tho scats )f the Legislators will be contested on !?m fliii-?r nf tl?o li-iuoo. A Universal! Article ok Faith. ?In these days of religious contention it has been thought impossible to indi cate an article of faith upon which all sects and classes were united.
