Turpentine For Snake Bites.?
The turpentine should bo put in a bottle
and tlir mouth being placed over the
spot, the liquid is brought directly in
contact with the wound by inverting the
bottlo. It should be held there until
relief is obtained. A complete allevia
tion of pain has been known to ensue in
less than a quarter of an hour,
A now stimulant has been invented in
England whose growing use is exciting
nonsiderable alarm. The stuff oonsUts
of a mixture of naphtha and ether, and
it produces a kind of intoxication which
its admirers find highly agreeable. No
check can be put on the consumption of
the fluid, for the reason that it is not
sold under the name of any excisable

A Lovo Story of Lexington Coun
ty.
Tho Augusta, Constitutionalist of the
oOth ultimo says:
Monday afternoon the police authori?;
ties received a. dispatch from A. E.
Kent, nt Summit Point, Lexington
County, S. C., stating that Dr.* A. Tay
lor had committed n breach of trust at
that place; that he wdUld reaeh Augus
ta by tho train on tho Chiirlotto,
Columbia and Augusta Kuilroad,
due at 12 o'clock, and requesting that he
be arrested immediately upon bis arrival.
In compliance with tho request, Taylor
was arrested when the train came in,
and detained to await tho'arrival of
Kent, who had also stated iu his dis
patch that ho would follow on aftor
Taylor and reach Augusta Tuesday
evening. Taylor had in his possession
when arrested two gun*, both heavily
charged, a loaded revolver, and a large
sum of money in ourron-jy and silver
coiu. His story is that some timo since
he was engaged to n young lady at
Mount Summit, for whom he was also
guardian. Everything went as merry
as a marriage bell, and nothing disturbed
tho course ol true lovo until a Northern
man named A. E. Kent made his
appearance and set up a store in the
place where lived the affianced pair.
Kent immediately laidscigeto tho heart
of the young lady, ai.d finally succeed
cd iu w inning her affections and inducing
her to break off her engagement with Tay
lor, lie then?according to Tay lore's state
ineut?made a demand upon th ) rejec
ted lover for the property which the lat
ter held as guardian for the young lady.
Taylor refused to conip'y with the do
maud, and discovering tho measures wore
being taken foe his arrest, ho left for
Augusta, taking with him the in nicy
mentioned above. This money, Taylor
states.belongs to the young lady, and is
held by him as her guardian, Ho siys
that should he givo it up to Kent, he

to prcveut Kent's taking it from him by
force

hereby required with strict regard to the
provisions of tho Constitution and laws of
this State, touching your duty in such case,
to cause such Election to he held in your re
spective Counties on the day aforesaid, and
fnr the ascertaining and determining the
persons who shall have been duly elected
thereat.
All bar-rooms and drinking saloons shall
be closed on the day of Election, and any
person who shall sell any intoxicating
drinks on thai day, Bhall be guilty of a mis
demeanor, and on conviction thereof, shall
be fined in a sum not less (ban one hundred
dollars, or he imprisoned for a period not
less than one mouth, nor m " ?? than six

Orangcburg County, that in compiaee with

act ot the General Assembly approved March

Clerk shall immediately proceed public'.v to
open the ballot box and count the ballots

out adjournment or interruption until the

of tho result thereof, and sign the same as
nature of the Election ?hall acquire, if in
counting two or moro like ballots should be
found lohlcd together compactly, only one
shall be counted and the others destroyed,
but if they boar different names, the same
?hall be destroyed and not counted. If'
more ballots should be found on opening
the box than there are names on the poll
list, all the ballots shall bo returned to the
box, and thoroughly mixed together, and
o:;e_of the Managers or the Clerk shall with
out seeing the ballots, draw therefrom and
immediately destroy as many ballots as there
are in excess of the number of names on
the poll-list.
Within three days thereafter the Chair
man or one of the managers to bo designa
ted in writing by tho Hoard, shall deliver to
the Commissioners of Election the poll-list,
the boxes containing the ballots, and written
statement of the result ot the Election in bis
precinct. The Polls shall bo opened at
t> o'clock in the forenoon and closed at
G o'clock in the afternoon, on the said day
of Election, nnd shall be kept open during
these hours without intermission or adjourn
ment, nnd the Managers shall administer to
each person offering to vote, an oath that
they are qualified to vote at this Election
according to the Constitution of this State,
and that they have not voted during this
Election.
In compliance with the above, tho Polla
will be opened at tho following places and
