The County Convention. .? ?' Before our next issue the County Convention for Orangeburg County will have met and made its nominations. The heart of every honest Republican is anxiously awaiting the result. If proper sort of nominations aro placed in the field, there will be no doubt of the fcuceesss of the Republican party in this County on the 16th of October next. But it should be remembered that there is already n divison in our party, and that tho Democrats are waiting for an op purtuuity to put a ticket of their owj in tho field. A Democratic Chuirman has been appointed for this County, and when tho time comes, and n chauco is offered, he will not be slow iu orgauiz . ing bis party. In the event that there should be two Republican tickets pre sented to the public, the Democrats will have an open road to victory, in ] rpito of our three thousand majority The Charleston News, a juurnal that has a deep seated and hearty hatred to wards the blacks, advises the Democratic chairmen, throughout tho State, to be on the qui viue, and whenever there is a chance to slip in their men, to do so, and spurn the support of the colored rotors. Tho News is usually cautious?having brains enough to look a little way beyond its own nose?but whon it presented this advice to the white people of South Carolina, we don't think, after the scuond sober thought, tlua it could see any wisdom or humane policy in its course. Shame on the man who in one instance begs the colored vote, and h& another, damns it. Col ored men, tho Charleston News has no use for.you; advises the party to do all they can to have you put a good ticket in the field, where it is certain that you are sure to win, but wherover the Demo* crate may be in the majority, its policy is not. to touch you. Was there ever such an infernal spirit of downright hollishocss exhibited through the roUimns of any newspaper bofore, excopt whorov ignorance, and hearts bronzed with- ifee scathing corruption of bell, control tho editorial pen? It has been our desire to have the Republican party net so as to appeal to (.ho masses of the people, both white and black, but how can any expect the colored people to beod eutjh teachings when such Jainn able doctrines as tho above are practised by their enemies ? Decs the Charleston News' propose to make a chattel ol the ' Republican party ? Doca it imagine that tho sunlight of intelligence does 'not illumino tho path of any but its carpet-bag editors?.It is really mistaken if its poralytia uervea have succeeded in making it so full of coooait. There ore some things that thatjourual can advise us oo, sod which we will consider, and, ggradventure, act upon, out whru it resorti to downright devilment, wo loose our patieooe with it, and feel more like damning the thing to etonral infamy thao blessing it with a- compliment upon moving into iti new quarters. Bat lot us return to the County Convention. / It is so, that the party in this County has never before occupied a position so i uncertain as the present. Heretofore ticket placed in the field, and labelled Republic;!c" was shuro to win. No otioe was over taken of tho character of the men upon it. The State Conven tion promised a reformation in (his particular. No party is laboring harder to have good men placed upon tho County tiekete than the State Exeoutive Committee. Thoy are men of intelligence, and feel tbat the Republican party must live longer than two years. Their desires in this connection will never be gratified if Republicans, throughout the State, BanUeft no concern in 'he mat ter. Good men must be placed in nomi nation j the Republican party is pledged to Reform; and the Republican party must live. The County Convention, whieh will assemble on Tuesday must remember these three facts. The Bolters'support era in Orangebors: are looking forward to the result of its work with anxious eyes. They think that there will be a disaffection, no matter who is nominated. ?1*2 grant it. No Convention bus ever &>eet?bled that gare entire satisfaction ; therP bave been fftct things as Con vention? presenting mon to the public absolutely obnoxious, offensive, peuriJ* and weak. The Bolters want this to be the ease on Tucsduy next. We knewthoir jrogramme It is their purpose to get as many men in the regular Convention as possible: make a nard tight for their friends; if defeated, to withdraw with as many delegates as they oan pcrauadi nwny, assemble immediately afterwards, put forth careful nominations, and de clare them the regular nominees. They, tho Bolters, will then call their own Convention, which will make no nomi nation, but ratify the nominations made by thj Bolters from the regular Con vention. Cannot every man see how daugerens and deep-laid this game is K There is no use disguising the fact. Ii the Republican Convention shows no re ference to merit on Tuesday, the future may have some cause for apologising for the defeat of tho party. Those are progressive times of ours, and progressive men must bo regarded. The Republican party doesn't want mill stones tied around its neck. Live, aotive, and vigorous men arc the only ones who can insure its perp3tuation. We bave no choice to put before thw Convention. We simply want it to do its duty. If it fails in that, we say frankly that its nominees will deserve defeat. Gentlemen, we bid you be true to yourselves, your party uud its principles. Like Pie-Crust The Republican, of Saturday, says that Mr. Reubeu Tomlinson -'will run to the end, ' if he only gets five thous _? ...?-.._?? tm= :- - -I ...... ? - -= = ?-"?-ajr p:,^-~~, considering that Mr. Tomlinson has no more control over the brains of the movement of which ho is the figure head, than Mrs. I'artington s mop hud over tho wuves of the broad Atlantic. When Orr, Corbiu, Sawyer and Boweu give a publie pledge that they will not abandon ''the ''bolt," even if the Democrats nominate a third ticket, it will be time enough to put their since* ity to tho touch. Until then, such u promise as that of Mr. Tomliusou will not help him or deceive the public.? Charleston News. ^.How does the Quaket candidate like the above f A little while ago he was the nicest sort of creatures?to day tho squatty fellow is showu to bo a mere ?'figure-head'' and aa brittle as "pie orust." M r. By as will ox plain. ^- ? i?IM ... wiihi - The jire.w of tho country teems with columns of praise of Mike O'CornoM a eloquence. He is now in Massachusetts engaged) in stumping tbat State fur Grceley. We have read the most of his speeches and if there is anything in them more than tho "eloquence" of the com monest stuuip orator we have never dis covered it. He \i a man of J?rne ability, has a good delivery, and tberoin consists^ his charms of oratory, If there ia anything about him. Why, oar neighbor on the corner, under all of its cd it oral changes aim pecuniary euibaraauienw, Qvausnavsi gotten up an editorial that would bare sounded as eloquent in print aa the speeches of the "South Carolina orator." It is a dovliah sight better to be born lucky then rich. ?-, ?aa?<??nM?rr*rii Messrs. Mclotyjre & Co hare com menced the publication of a paper ia Colleton County. The inside ia printed at the North, and the outside, to judge from its typographical appearance, ia first seen in a certain office in Charles too. If w? are incorrect, we shall bo glad to be so informed. We dispise "out sides,'* aud "iosldea" and desire, for the sake of the prosperity of our own focal newspapers, to discourage euoh a system of distributing Northern ideas and quack advertisements through the South, as are practised in certain Counties in thia State. When the Colleton Gazette is published in Colleton, we shall place it upon our exchange list. We shall not do so before. It, being Republican in politics docs not soften our prejudice against the institution that published the first half of it. There is a nasty fight going on be tween W nipper aud Stuaiis for ihn Senatorship of Beaufort Couuty. Which of the two aspirants ia ahead w? are un able to say, but we do venture tho as sertion, from our knowledge of the two men, that so fur as intelligence is con corned, Smalls is a dwarf to Whippcr. For conceit, ignorance and pomposity, Smalls had no equal in the lost Legislature. The only objection to Whippcr is, that he keeps company with Tomlinson and Curb in. Tho ti?ar'e8t00 Republican has been levied upon h/ Sheriff Macky. It appears that he holds a uiotgago over the "shebang," and detertnning no.^ "9 be ' bespattered by his-own organ, seizod its presses, type, &o. It is out again, how ever, but evidently printed iu the office of the Sunday Tixiti or New*. The Republican was exceedingly spiny to wards its last days. It has been said by main of the sup porters of Tomliuson that he is a muu of extraordinary intelligence. We have seen the gentleman aud it'there is any thing extra about him, he has a remark ably bad way of showing it. flu wouldn't do for a clown, although we have heard it suggested that Corbin, his bl 'ted fugleman, would make u first-rate ring-master. Buwen and Mackey are hammering away at each other in Charleston. Knives and pistols are sometimes used by the roughs of both pirties ; wheu thj respective leaders invariibly decamp.
